WORKSHOP
DESCRIPTION:
This Beck
Institute virtual workshop will provide an overview of evidence-based cognitive
behavioral strategies that can be utilized for the assessment and treatment of
individuals with suicide-related ideation and/or behaviors. Emphasis will be
placed on biopsychosocial risk and protective indicators for suicide. Attendees
will be introduced to the suicide nomenclature, best practices in documentation,
and will learn how to continually assess for suicide risk, using the Columbia
Suicide Severity Rating Scale. In terms of treatment, first, attendees will
learn about basic cognitive behavioral strategies for structuring sessions –
including setting a collaborative agenda, prioritizing items on the session
agenda, assigning action plan(s), measuring progress, and eliciting feedback.
Second, attendees will become familiar with Aaron Beck’s cognitive model for
suicide as a framework for conceptualizing and treating their patients. Third,
the components of an efficacious, trans-diagnostic, and brief 10-session
outpatient Cognitive Therapy for Suicide Prevention (CT-SP) protocol will be
reviewed. Emphasis will be placed on specific techniques of intervention (e.g.,
assisting patient with the suicide “story” narrative, building skills such as
emotion regulation and problem solving, instilling hope, planning for safety,
preventing relapse) in order to assist providers in maximizing the safety of
individuals at risk for suicide. Information about helpful online tools and
resources will be provided. Attendees will practice learned strategies within a
virtual setting and questions about expected implementation challenges will be
addressed. Finally, attendees will learn about the warning signs of
professional burnout and discuss the importance of self-care strategies,
particularly as they provide services to this highly vulnerable and challenging
patient population.
(Please plan to attend all
sessions) Sessions were spaced out over multiple days to allow for clinicians
to attend in 3-hour segments instead of entire days. Please save all dates in

Important note about
Continuing Education Credits (CEs):
This training has been accepted through
AOCMHP as a MHACBO accredited and approved training. Attendees may receive a
certificate for this training indicating MHACBO approval. A link will be sent out after the training.
For those needing Social Work or other CEUs
specifically, you can take your training completion certificate and course info
to seek approval to your individual licensing boards. Beck Institute is unable to provide CEs for
organizational trainings, whether virtual or in-person (unfortunately it is
impossible with their current CE provider). However, they’d be happy to provide
documents for individuals to seek approval.
Training link and materials will be sent out.
