About our Chickens and our Practices:
We raise the highest quality Western Rustic Chickens (a hardy, slow growing breed with incredible meat) on fresh grass in mobile "tractors". We move them through our pasture and food forest multiple times each day to give them the freshest grass and to use their nitrogen rich droppings as the perfect bio-fertilizer!
The chickens are fed an organic, non-GMO ration from
Coen Farm near Camrose. The grains are grown in Alberta without the use of any chemicals or fertilizers and the feed is milled fresh for our farm. There is no corn, no soy, no chemicals, additives or fillers. The feed is fermented in pails for 48 hours and poured out on the ground rather than traditional feeders to encourage scratching and foraging for seeds and bugs in the grass. As Joel Salatin would say; we are expressing the "Chicken-ness of the Chicken".
As a heritage breed that has not been genetically altered to gain weight quickly, Western Rustics take about 12 weeks to get up to an efficient size for a roast chicken; 4+ weeks longer than the standard Cornish Cross or Cornish Giant breed of meat bird. With healthier animals raised on grass in a less stressful environment, the taste of the meat is completely worth the extra time, energy, and cost. We raise our birds this way because we are committed to feeding our family the best food in the world and we are proud to share this food with our community!
About the Ordering Process:
We offer discounted prices on bulk orders before the season begins. This helps us select the right quantity of chickens to raise for our community. The minimum order is 20lbs. We charge a $50 Deposit at the time of order. The deposit will be deducted from your total amount owing at the time of delivery/ pickup in the summer.
About our Pricing:
We charge $9/lb for our chicken. You can select whether you would like larger or smaller roasts and we will do our best to accommodate. The minimum order is 20lbs (approximately 4-5 chickens).
The carcass weights can vary from 3.5-6.5lbs, although we have averaged 4.5lbs pretty consistently the last few years. On a bulk order, you can expect to average approximately 4.5lbs per chicken (10 chickens will give you approximately 45lbs of meat).
