2023-2024 Attendance Recovery Registration

We're excited to announce an upcoming Attendance Recovery Program aimed at reducing chronic absenteeism among our students. The Virginia Department of Education is rolling out this initiative to combat chronic absenteeism across the state. As part of this initiative, students will have the opportunity to recover missed days of school by participating in meaningful instructional outside of regular school hours. The Attendance Recovery Out-of-School Instructional Plan is designed to allow all students to recover learning gaps while recovering absences. Instruction will be in areas of student need as determined by student academic data. Students will receive targeted individualized instruction at these sessions.  Students should be prepared to ask for assistance in areas that they may be struggling with as well.

For every three-hour period spent in these activities, students will be able to recover one day of absence, up to a maximum of 15 days. This program is designed to provide students with a proactive way to address absenteeism while engaging in meaningful instruction that support their overall growth and development.

Students can sign up for this recovery by completing the form below.

The student will receive a reminder via email and phone/text.

Rules, procedures, and expectations:

  • Recovery sessions will be held in the library.  On Wednesdays, and Fridays, students should enter directly to the library.  On Saturdays, students should enter at the front doors/main entrance of the school.  On some occasions students may be asked to enter through the gym entrance because of SAT testing in the building.  We will alert students in advance.
  • Only students registered will be admitted.  No walk-ups.
  • NPS Bus Transportation to go home will be provided on Wednesday, and Friday sessions.  Transportation to and from Granby on Saturdays will not be provided at this time.
  • If parents/guardian are picking up students, the parent must be ready to pick-up students at 5:15pm.  Causing our staff to wait to watch your student until they are picked up will result in your student not being allowed to continue with the recovery.  Students will be dismissed from the front of the school.  The parent/guardian should park in front of the school or in front of the gym.
  • All students are expected to arrive to the attendance recovery sessions on time.  2:15pm on Wednesdays and Fridays, and 8:00am or 11:00am on Saturdays.  Doors will be shut promptly at the start time.  Any student who arrives late will not be admitted - no exceptions.  Please plan accordingly, meaning students should arrive 5 minutes before their start time.
  • Students cannot be picked up early for appointments, etc.  Those students will forfeit any time already attended.
  • Students must stay awake and work on school work for the entire time.  Students who are dismissed for not working will not get the attendance recover, and will not be able to return to anymore sessions.
  • Students who are disruptive or violate the Norfolk Public Schools Student Code of Conduct, will not only be dismissed, but will receive a discipline referral.  Consequences will be assigned, and the student will not be allowed to attend future sessions.
  • Chromebooks will be provided.  Students must bring their own school work.  Attendance Recovery Staff is not responsible for getting any student assignments.  Plan accordingly - student should reach out to their teachers in advance.
  • There will be two breaks, with snacks provided.
