Slate Run Title 1 Parent Information Meeting
What does it mean to be a Title I School?
Being a Title I school means receiving federal funding to help students who are low achieving or at most risk of falling behind. A purpose of Title I is to build school and parent capacity for strong parental involvement to improve student achievement.

What is a Title I Schoolwide (SWP) Program?
The school uses Title I funds to upgrade the entire educational program of the school. The school must develop a schoolwide plan which includes a comprehensive needs assessment of the entire school.  This plan is developed with a team of stakeholders including parents and is reviewed annually.

*Schools do not have to identify specific students for participation.

What Curriculum Does Our School Use?
In April of 2014, the Indiana State Board of Education approved the adoption of new standards for English/Language Arts and Mathematics. These new standards are the result of a process designed to identify, evaluate, synthesize, and create high-quality, rigorous standards for Indiana students. They have been validated as college and career ready by the Indiana Education Roundtable, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, the Indiana Department of Education, the Indiana State Board of Education, and the Indiana Center for Education and Career Innovation. This means that students who successfully master these objectives for what they should know and be able to do in Math and English/Language Arts disciplines by the time they graduate from high school will be ready to go directly into the workplace or a postsecondary educational opportunity without the need of remediation.

What Tests Will My Child Be Taking?
New Albany Floyd County Schools use Common Formative Assessments in both Language Arts (grades 2- 4) and Math (grades 1- 4).  Assessments are given every four weeks.  These assessments are teacher created and reviewed annually for rigor and standard alignment.  We also use Developmental Reading Assessments (DRA’s) to determine reading levels in grades K - 4.  DRA’s are given 2-3 times a year and on an as needed basis.

The Indiana Department of Education requires the deliverance of both IREAD (Spring, grade 3) and ILEARN (Spring, grades 3 and 4).  These are comprehensive assessments covering the standards set forth for both third and fourth grades.

Proficiency Levels for (School Year).
Students are expected to meet a Developmental Reading Assessment level each year in reading.  If they do not meet the standard, they are given many interventions through our Multi-tiered system of support.  Parents are notified of their child’s progress and intervention needs through letters and communication through their teacher.  In math, students take the CFA exams every four weeks and are expected to attain a 4/5 or 5/5 for a passing grade in each standard.  Much like language arts, students are given interventions if the scores are not attained.

I am aware of the curriculum my child's school uses, what tests my child will be taking, and school year proficiency levels. *

Parental Involvement Policy.
The Title I parent policy and compact is made available to families at the beginning of the school year as part of the Student Handbook.  Families sign a form acknowledging that they have received the handbook that contains the parent policy and compact.  Copies of the parent policy and compact are also made available at our annual Title I meeting and also at parent-teacher conferences in the fall.  A parent representative attends the policy and compact meeting to work with school staff to revise and edit the policy in May of each school year.  We have two publicized meetings yearly (one evening and one day time) to meet the needs of the parent's schedules.  This year it will also be made available virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The parent compact is given out annually at parent-teacher conferences which take place this year on November 3, 2020.

School Parent Involvement Policy Requirements:
Parental Involvement Opportunities:

Volunteer in classrooms
PTO events (carnival, penny wars, Valentine Grams, etc.)
Parent Learning Days (Meet with instructional coaches and visit classroom)

Parents' Right-To-Know:
Parents of all children in all Title I schools have the right to request and receive timely information on the professional qualifications of their children’s classroom teacher(s). This notice must be sent at the start of each school year and include:

If the teacher has met State certification and licensing requirements for the grade levels and subjects for which the teacher provides instruction;
If state certification and licensing requirements have been waived for the teacher under emergency or other temporary status;
If the teacher is teaching in the field of discipline for which they are certified or licensed; and
If your child is receiving Title I or Special Education services from paraprofessionals, his or her qualifications.

The Parent Right to Know letter is mailed to all Title I families by the district office.  A copy is sent to the principal to keep at the building-level in the event a parent asks for a copy of the letter.
Parent-Teacher Notice:
Schools are required to notify parents if their child has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet applicable State certification or licensure requirements at the grade level and subject area in which the teacher has been assigned.

All teachers at Slate Run are qualified and certified by the State of Indiana.  Licenses are held by both school and district administration.  In the event that a non-highly qualified teacher is in a classroom for more than four consecutive weeks, the principal will send a letter to each family notifying them of the situation.

I understand the Parents' Right-To-Know letter, and the Parent-Teacher Notice for my child's individual school. *
