Team Alberta is bringing a team of 12 Wrestlers to the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG):

2023 NORTH AMERICAN INDIGENOUS GAMES / Athlete Interest Form
*Please note - this is not a registration form to attend the games.  By completing this form, you are declaring your interest in participating in tryouts and the team selection process.  

The North American Indigenous Games will be held in Halifax Nova Scotia in July 2023. This international, multi-sport event celebrates youth, volunteerism and Indigenous culture.

The Indigenous Sport Council Alberta (ISCA) is recognized as the Indigenous sport governing body and has overall responsibility for management of the Team Alberta Selection process for the Games.

Tryout dates / times / and locations will be posted to ISCA website, shared on Social Media, and emailed out to athletes that have completed this form.  

NOTE- Athletes must be residents of Alberta.  Athletes must have the ability to travel and to comply with NAIG and Provincial Covid-19 policies and restrictions is a requirement for athletes. All athletes for Team Alberta will need to be fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or receive a vaccination exemption by the NAIG committee.

Indigenous Ancestry All athletes competing in the NAIG must be of Canadian and/or American Indigenous ancestry. Eligibility and team selection must comply with the internal policies within each team. All participants must provide proof of ancestry. 

The following items will be accepted as proof of ancestry: 

Canada: Status Card, Inuit and Inuvialuit identification, or a Métis Card from one of the provincial bodies recognized by the Métis National Council (the Métis Nation of Ontario, The Manitoba Métis Federation, the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan, the Métis Nation of Alberta, the Métis Nation British Columbia). 

United States: Tribal Identification Card or Certificate of Indian Blood.

If none of the above apply (i.e., non---status Indians) the Declaration of Indigenous Ancestry Form (Appendix B) must be completed by the athlete, submitted to the team and endorsed by the regions first and secondarily approved the NAIG Council. The Chef de Mission will then submit this form, along with all accompanying ancestry information from the athlete, in the Host Society’s registration package on the final deadline (refer to Section 7: Participant Registration). During the games, any questions concerning a participant’s Indigenous ancestry must be conducted through a formal protest. Any protest lodged against a participant must follow the procedures outlined in section 12.2: Formal Protest Procedures/Eligibility Protests.

Code of Conduct
This Code of Conduct identifies the standard of behavior that is expected of all athletes who actively participate in programs coordinated by and/or sanctioned by the Indigenous Sport Council of Alberta (ISCA).
General responsibilities of those who sign this code of conduct are:

Athletes, Coaches, Managers, Officials, Chaperones and Mission Staff are expected to conduct themselves at all times with integrity, fairness and respect. The Indigenous Sport Council of Alberta (ISCA) is committed to providing a safe and positive sport environment in which all individuals are treated with respect. Athletes, Coaches, Managers, Officials, Chaperones and Mission Staff must refrain from comments and/or behaviors that are disrespectful, offensive, abusive, racist, or sexist.

Behaviors that constitute harassment or abuse will not be tolerated by the ISCA. Any participant (adult or youth) found under the influence of alcohol or drugs immediately before, during, or immediately after a North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) event/program, or during travel to and/or from any scheduled NAIG event/pro disqualified immediately. Any participant (adult or youth) shall not engage in any activity or behavior which interferes with a competition or with any athlete's preparation for a competition, or which endangers the safety of others.

All Athletes, Coaches, Managers, Officials, Chaperones and Mission Staff shall refrain from using tobacco products smoking near the field of play - or the athlete village where applicable. When participating at NAIG all Athletes, Coaches, Managers, Officials, Chaperones and Mission Staff must reside in the area designated by the Host Society and strictly adheres to the curfew as defined by the Host Society. The ISCA and/or the athletes Coaches may set an earlier curfew, as they deem appropriate.

When participating at the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) all athletes, coaches, managers, and chaperones must adhere to the restrictions as identified by the accreditation privileges provided to them by the Host Society. When participating at the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) all Team Alberta Athletes, Coaches, Managers, Officials, Chaperones and Mission Staff must attend the Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies, medal ceremonies, and official functions in their full Team Alberta walkout uniform.

Drugs, Doping Penalties and Fair Play:
The Indigenous Sport Council of Alberta (ISCA) strongly embrace the concept of Fair Play in Sport, and unequivocally oppose cheating in whatever form, which includes the use of substances and methods banned by the National Sport Organizations and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport.

The ISCA recognizes the Canadian Policy on Penalties for Doping in Sport (endorsed by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, adopted by Fitness and Amateur Sport and the National Sport Organizations) and will honour suspensions of athletes or others determined to have committed doping or doping related infractions. Therefore, any person under suspension for a doping or doping related infraction shall be ineligible to participate in any ISCA coordinated and/or sanctioned event/program until the suspension has been lifted by the National Sport Organization and acknowledged by the CCES.

Discipline:
The ISCA Executive Director or, in the case of the NAIG, the Chef de Mission in consultation with the coaches, managers, and chaperones shall be responsible for implementing the discipline procedures.

Possible penalties, depending on the severity of the offense, may include one of or a combination of the following sanctions:
• Earlier curfew
• Verbal or written reprimand
• Verbal or written apology

Suspension from certain Team Alberta activities - or ISCA event/programs - that may include suspension from the next scheduled competition. Revoking Team Alberta clothing Removal of certain Team Alberta or Athlete Village privileges Removal from a portion of, or the remainder (expulsion), of the Games/event/program. If sent home from the Games the related expenses will be the responsibility of the
athlete and/or his/her parents.
• Withdrawal of return travel privileges.
Other sanctions as may be considered appropriate for the offense.
• Criminal charges.
DECLARATION - I agree to abide by this Code of Conduct while traveling to, participating at, and returning from any tryouts, and any event/program coordinated and/or sanctioned by the Indigenous Sport Council of Alberta (ISCA).
