~ WHAT IS THE SPRINGFIELD PROMISE NEIGHBORHOOD? ~
Springfield Promise Neighborhood (SPN or Promise) is a non-profit organization that works with residents, families, and children on the south side of Springfield, Ohio.

Our purpose broadly is poverty alleviation, but the real on-the-ground purpose is to provide an environment in which youth can thrive.  The schools of the Promise Zone serve the most economically, academically, and socially challenged student populations in the Springfield City School District. 100% of the students meet federal poverty guidelines for free and reduced lunch.  The students reside in a highly mobile and under-resourced community.  Our job in partnership with the Springfield City School District and community organizations is to help provide extended day and year opportunities, parent engagement, enrichment experiences, and more.  Very specifically, we want to help children to read and love learning; eat well and love fresh foods; and be kind leaders who contribute to our community's success.  Our job in the neighborhood is to work with the residents to revitalize a community that lacks playgrounds, day care facilities, and places of beauty and safety.  We work with residents to help transform blighted areas into ones of beauty and function, abandoned and poisoned ground into gardens, and turn the isolation of poverty into a connected and supportive community.

The premise of Springfield Promise Neighborhood operates from the conviction that sustained change relies on caring for a certain place - fueled by the assets of those who work and live there.  At the center of change are the children; we work on their behalf with the thought that their academic and social growth requires a good and supportive school and a good and supportive community.

~ WHAT IS AMERICORPS? ~
National Service Members - AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA positions - are offered in communities around the country, supported by grants from the Corporation for National and Community Service. These individuals are not employees, but rather national service members placed to serve with an organization addressing poverty.

Summer VISTA members serve for 9 weeks in the summer, also receiving a bi-weekly stipend (currently ~$2,700 per summer term) and an education award of $1,374 or a cash award of $311 upon successful completion of the service term.

Part-time PromiseCorps members serve in a direct service capacity in elementary schools and pre-school for 450 hours over the course of the service term - usually a school year, from September through July.
