To clarify, there are different parts of this application that you will be asked to fill out. You will be asked for a reference contact. If you do not have one, you will not be penalized, but having one could certainly help you. You will also be asked for your resume. In the application, try to not restate your resume, but reveal your personality, work ethic, dedication, availability, and qualities.

We are looking for board members with these qualities: full engagement with the board, self-motivated, passionate, available, and dedicated. This should not be a resume stacker, it should be something you are truly interested in.

What does it mean to be fully engaged with the board? A TYWI board member's job does not end when they've checked off the last thing on their to-do list. Rather, they constantly engage with ideas, the board, celebrations, attend meetings, discuss ideas, and help with projects that aren't in their scope.

Self-Motivated is by far the most important quality. We do not want to micromanage you or have to check in with you to do your work. We expect board members to take initiative, pursue ideas, propose solutions, step out of their boundaries and help out, collaborate, and be leaders without reminders. This position is a leadership and innovation-based position. You are not a worker here, you are an active contributor to the growth of this organization through ideas, guidance, organization, leadership, and more. If you are not self-motivated to make this organization better, this is not the job for you.

Innovative: Our best board members are innovative. They think of unique ideas to grow the organization or step out of the boundaries. Our Executive Director is not a stickler for everything going her way. Being a TYWI board member gives a lot of creative freedom, so we urge you to take advantage of this opportunity. Want a project under TYWI? You got it. Want to email a big author to be part of our programs? You got it. Want to make changes to how we run things? You have that discretion. If you don't consider yourself as a visionary, please do not apply.
