If a child needs to be escorted outside or out of the line of sight from a teacher watching from the door, then at least two teachers must escort that child. If for any reason a teacher must be called out or needs to leave the classroom (other than for walking a child to the bathroom), there should still be a minimum of two teachers left in the classroom. Teacher minimums must still be observed. PLEASE do not accept children into your class without another teacher present! *

North River Children’s Ministry volunteers are now among those who must report suspected abuse under Georgia law. If a teacher believes that a child may be the victim of physical or sexual abuse by a teacher, parent, or other party, he/she should immediately inform the Children’s Ministry Director, who will report the suspected abuse in accordance with the procedures specified in the Georgia Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse Act. Church volunteers and staff should be alert to the physical signs of sexual abuse and molestation, as well as to behavioral and verbal signs that a victim may exhibit.  Some of the more common signs are summarized below. Physical signs may include: Lacerations and bruises; Nightmares; Irritation, pain, or injury to the genital area; Difficulty with urination; Discomfort when sitting; Torn or bloody underclothing; Venereal disease. Behavioral signs may include: Anxiety when approaching Church or nursery area; Nervous or hostile behavior toward adults; Sexual self-consciousness; “Acting out” of sexual behavior; Withdrawal from Church activities and friends. Verbal signs may include the following statements: “I don’t like [a particular Church volunteer].”; “[A Church volunteer] does things to me when we’re alone.”; “I don’t like to be alone with [A Church volunteer].”; “[A Church volunteer] fooled around with me.” Confidentiality: Abuse information is extremely confidential and potentially volatile.  Therefore, there should be no discussions of any abuse information with anyone other than as directed by this policy.  Teachers should discuss any potential indication of abuse, either physical or sexual, only with the Children’s Ministry Director unless otherwise directed by the Children’s Ministry Director. *

In an emergency, I will safely harbor or evacuate the children in my care as quickly and responsibly as possible per appropriate incident. In a lockdown (both soft/hard) or in inclement weather I will keep the children in my care safe and as quiet as possible, away from windows and I will remain calm and reassuring. In case of fire I will evacuate to the nearest door (bringing my class roster book and double checking that all children are accounted for and with me) and proceed to the playground. *
