Integrating Ethical & Social Issues in the Computing Classroom, with Embedded EthiCS @ Harvard
Time: 3-4 pm EST
Date: Thursday, June 8, 2023

Computing technologies are pervasive in today’s world, and, with the recent surge of artificial intelligence applications, they are increasingly taking on roles once thought to require human judgement. These developments make it all the more important for both future technologists and savvy computer users to understand the ethical and social issues that arise in connection with computing technologies, and how they might address them in their own contexts. Because of this, computing curricula, including AP Computer Science Principles, often include social impacts of computing as a major topic for instruction. However, it can be difficult to find resources to effectively integrate social and ethical issues into tightly packed technical courses.

This webinar will introduce participants to a distinctive approach to teaching ethical and social issues in the computing classroom. Developed at Harvard University, the Embedded EthiCS method distributes ethics lessons across the computer science curriculum, and integrates them into technical courses. This webinar will describe how the Embedded EthiCS program came to be, how our pedagogy works, and how educators can use our resources to develop their own lessons on social and ethical issues in computing.

Once you register, you will be sent a link to the Zoom platform, which we use for the Consortium Connects roundtables. You will need to log in a few minutes early to ensure your technology works properly.
