We are so excited to announce that this summer we will run our third Afrocentric Summer Mentorship Program- with a virtual twist! The program will run for four weeks in August 2020 with live online sessions on Saturdays, August 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29. The first day of the program (August 1) will include an orientation so it will take place from 12:00pm to 2:00pm. All other days of the program will take place from 12:00pm to 1:30pm. The goal of this program is to increase the academic and personal resilience of Black youth in Toronto from grades 7 to 12 and to establish positive and long-lasting mentorship networks with successful Black role models. As a mentor, your role is to be a guide, advocate, teacher, and social supporter for your mentees.
Each week, we will focus on a different African principle (e.g. Umoja/unity or Imani/faith) and our discussion of each principle will be grounded in a particular discipline (e.g. art or epidemiology). Weekly Saturday sessions will include an interactive presentation by an influential Black Toronto leader followed by group discussions and activities. Mentors will also meet with their paired participant(s) during the week. These meetings will include facilitated discussion based on the weekly principle and discipline, as well as free-form conversation guided by mentor and student interest. The total time commitment is approximately 3-4 hours each week in August as well as 2 training sessions in July. For more information, please visit us at
