Description:
Researchers from the Youth, Media & Wellbeing Research Lab and the Computer Science Department at Wellesley College are hosting a free virtual summer workshop for middle school girls about designing healthier social media experiences.
The workshop will have 3 main components: a) reflection activities to explore how young girls use social media through photos, digital storytelling, and group discussions, b) STEM activities for designing new healthy social media experiences, and c) an interactive small and whole group learning experience featuring Wellesley College students as co-facilitators as well as expert speakers on STEM, digital citizenship, and online wellbeing. Topics discussed will include online self-regulation, social support, identity exploration, internet privacy, and STEM innovation and engagement.
Dates:
The workshop will be remote and run Monday - Thursday, July 19-22 from 1:00pm to 3:30pm EST. Although we are based on the east coast, participants are welcome from all over the country. We are accepting approximately 25 workshop participants.
Eligibility:
Participants must have Wifi access and a home device to attend Zoom meetings and access websites.
This year we are focusing on the experiences of girls and their digital worlds. Preference will be given to girls traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields, e.g., as racial/ethnic minorities, first generation to attend college, etc. Priority will also be given to those from the summer 2020 waitlist.
Entering 6th-8th grade students in Fall 2021 and students who can attend all 4 days of the workshop.
Since workshops themes change from year to year, past workshop participants are welcome to join again!
Other Details:
Zoom login details will be sent to each student ahead of the workshop start date. All students will receive a Youth, Media, & Wellbeing research lab t-shirt from Wellesley College.
