Community Partnership on Homelessness Petition
We the undersigned petition the city of Palm Springs to temporarily close and secure Baristo Park under an emergency order to protect public health and safety.

Baristo Park, which contains a basketball court, playground and picnic tables, is surrounded by a neighborhood with many children. For too long the park has been overtaken by a service-resistant group of people that openly sell and use illegal drugs. It is now notoriously known as “Heroin Park.”

This intervention is long overdue. We believe this action will ultimately benefit both the current park occupants and the community at large. It is neither humane nor in the public interest to enable this behavior in a public space. This petition asks the city to secure the park and then reopen it as a youth-focused park that is accessible to local residents and their children.

ABOUT US: Community Partnership on Homelessness (CPoH) is a group of caring, concerned Palm Springs residents and local business owners advocating for a lasting solution to alleviate the suffering of unhoused people and the underlying causes of substance addiction and/or mental illness. We advocate opening of a professionally managed temporary 24-hour shelter that will serve the unsheltered until a permanent Navigation Center can be opened. The Navigation Center must be a suitably located, professionally managed, multidisciplinary and multifaceted campus approach with comprehensive wraparound services including overnight shelter, flexible interim housing options with access to permanent housing, drug and alcohol treatment, intensive case management, 12-step programs, employment assistance and referral to outside intensive mental health treatment.
