Goal Setting Worksheet
The purpose of this worksheet is to help you establish your training goals, and then break down the steps to getting there. Often as athletes we get caught up in the expectations of our culture and environment - which can shape our goals. Those kinds of goals will either be a grind to reach, or they just won't stick.

At Samsara, we want to help you establish goals that are deeply motivating and attainable.  We also want to help you establish goals where you'll enjoy the journey even if you fall short of the finish line.

This form guides you through a process of establishing goals that matter to you.

Rapid Brainstorm- list all the desires you have for your athletic life in the next 12 months. *
These could include performances you hope to achieve, injuries you hope to overcome, an experience you hope to have, or a state of mind you hope to have about this part of your life. For some athletes the goal is living in a way that allows them to be dynamic, and adapt to many different demands. Skimo race in January, Alaska expedition in the spring, local adventures in the summer. For others, it will be the straight and narrow road to a singular goal.
If you had to pick just 1 or 2 from the list above, which would you pick and why? *
How will you know if you achieve these 1 or 2 goals? *
Some goals are obvious, like run a sub 3hr marathon. Others are less so, such as resolving my back injury, reduce the guilt I feel around training, establish a healthy training routine.
Are these 1 or 2 goals attainable?  In what timeframe? *
Have you ever tried goals like this before?  If so, what was the result? *
Does my goal matter deeply to me?
Goals that don't matter on a deep level, will be hard to see through. Take time to think this one through. Sometimes we think we want something, but upon deeper reflection we realize that is because of external expectations. Those goals are a burden. Bragging rights aren't enough, we are seeking goals that move the needle on our happiness, on our sense that life is going well, that I'm accomplishing things that matter to me.

If I never share this goal with anyone else, would I still pursue this goal?
If I work hard for this goal, and come up short will I feel like all this work was worth it? Or will it feel like I wasted my time?
Is this goal reasonable, in the context of my life? How might my pursuit of these goals impact others in my life?
What does success look like in 12 months?  What about in 6 months?  And 3 months?
What are the key ingredients to reaching this 3 month marker in your mind? How much strength do I need? How much is my endurance capacity a limiting factor? How much does ‘movement intelligence’ or athleticism play into this journey? Do I have injuries that are going to get in the way of reaching my goal?
What are you missing to be able to pull these goals off now? Aerobic endurance? Strength? Athleticism? Is overcoming setbacks/injury a part of this journey?
