Steps to Getting an Amateur Radio License
  1. If you do not have a FCC Registration Number (FRN).  Get one here.
  2. Register here for a TCARA test session and pay the $15 exam fee* via credit card, PayPal, or Venmo.
  3. Take the exam.  See info for the day of the TCARA test session.
  4. When the FCC receives the examination information from the VEC, it will email a link to you with payment instructions ($35 FCC license application fee). The applicant MUST pay the fee from a computer or laptop.  The fee can NOT be paid from a cellphone or tablet .This is a time limited step (10 days), so be sure to do this asap or the cost will go up!  More information
  5. If the applicant does not receive the FCC email, they can go directly to the FCC Pay Fees Site and pay their fee.
  6. Once the FCC fee has been paid, the applicant can find the callsign granted by searching the FCC License Search using their FRN#.
* W5YI-mandated $14 plus $1 for online finance fees. No refunds are given. If you are unable to attend, we will keep a credit for you to take another exam with us within 12 months of the original test session.
