These dances are part of our culture and you may have even tried them at home. But where do these moves come from and what influence do they have on dance and culture today? Hosted by a well-known dancer with a deep understanding of dance history, our host uncovers why certain dances stand the test of time. They dissect clips of iconic dance performances with dance historians, demonstrate the moves at dance studios with other dancers and choreographers, and talk to the people who were there from the beginning. Meet Me On The Dance Floor is a video series exploring the interplay between music and dance and how these art forms are constantly influencing one another. In each episode, our host – a dancer and music enthusiast – takes you to a different dance floor, introducing you to the community creating the music and practicing the dance. Dip into a vogue ball and meet the dancing queens who strike poses to punchy electronic beats with repetitive vocal loops, while the MCs add layers of improvised rhymes and raps inspired by the dancers’ rapid moves. Join a bombazo dance jam and feel the African rhythms of drummers and how the music follows the movement of the bomba dancers. You’ll learn one essential move or component of the dance, such as the rhythmic patterns, instrumentation, or song lyrics, inspiring new ways to move, connect and create community.
