Vital Signs: Creative Arts for Black Lives Mini-Grants Call for Proposals
To support student voice and action related to the Black Lives Matter movement, The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, UMD Office of Diversity and Inclusion and UMD Office of Multicultural Involvement and Community Advocacy in partnership with Black Terps Matter announce the Spring 2022 round of Vital Signs: Creative Arts for Black Lives Mini-Grants.

Five (5) mini-grants of $500 USD each will be awarded to individual UMD student artists and UMD student organizations who are creating artistic and creative projects that affirm Black life and vitality, and respond to and/or interrogate white supremacy and anti-Blackness through the lens of their own identity. Mini-grant funds are intended to support costs associated with the development of these projects.

Both Black-identifying and non-Black-identifying creators may apply. For those applicants that are Black-identifying, we invite you to use this opportunity to creatively process any joy, pain, or vitality that you want to express. For those applicants that do not identify as Black, we ask that you approach your project and examine your topic from your own perspective with introspection and a critical eye.

We encourage students of all forms and levels of artistic experience to apply. Applicants do not need to be affiliated with a student organization.

о Projects must be in development during the Spring 2022 semester and must be creative and artistic in nature. Examples: visual art, music, plays, dance, poetry, podcasts, film, etc.
о Projects can either be in the ideation phase, already in progress or already completed.
о Grant recipients will be invited to show their completed projects or works-in-progress in a showcase near the end of the Spring 2022 semester. While these mini-grants are intended to enable significant project development to take place over the course of the Spring 2022 semester, projects are not required to be completed by the end of the Spring 2022 semester.
о Projects must adhere to campus safety guidelines related to COVID-19. To protect the health and safety of the campus community, virtual experiences or in-person installation experiences are recommended.
о Each grant recipient will be paired with an Artist Advisor based in D.C., Maryland or Virginia in their artform to provide feedback and guidance that may inform the development of the project. Grant recipients and their Artist о Advisor will meet virtually at least twice over the course of the semester. (Please refer to the “About Artist Advisors” section of this document for more information.)
о Grant recipients are responsible for all logistics associated with the presentation of the project (purchase of any supplies or equipment, reserving space or venues, creating websites, marketing, etc.)
о Projects will also be promoted by The Clarice, MICA and ODI.

We invite applicants to consider addressing the main topics in combination with any of the themes below:
о Memorialization of Richard Collins III
о Black migration, diaspora, undocumented Black communities
о Intersectionality, Black queer/trans lives, Black feminism/misogynoir, Black disabled lives
о Multiraciality, transracial adoption
о Media representation, visibility, Black Art Matters
о Body as political, skin tones, colorism, fat-justice, ableism
о Love, intimacy, sexuality
о Solidarity in activism, social movement
о Religiosity and spirituality, Blackness/anti-Blackness in your religious/faith community
о Anti-Blackness in your racial/ethnic community
о Your relationship to white supremacy, unlearning Whiteness
о Only for those that are Black-identifying, consider:
о Self-love, acceptance, identity
о Process of healing, or lack thereof, Black pain
о Black joy as resistance
о Raising Black children, mentorship, chosen family
о Intergenerational trauma, intergenerational healing

The deadline to submit a project proposal for Spring 2022 mini-grants is Monday, January 31, 2022  at 11:59PM ET.
