Thank you for your interest in teaching with Wicked Workshop!  Let's get to know each other! To see more about what we do, see our website at www.wickedworkshop.org and visit us on Facebook and Instagram

WHO WE ARE:
Wicked Workshop is a maker-based experience that introduces youth K-8th grade to the building blocks of architecture and design through decision-making strategies, complex problem solving, and critical thinking methods recognized as vital 21st century skills necessary to succeed in work, life and citizenship.  We provide a straightforward hands-on curriculum based on authentic, reality-based projects that foster inspiration for design, independent thinking, self-directed learning, exploration, iteration and creativity.  We tackle “wicked problems” such as environmental health, scarcity of materials or inadequate shelter using a hands-on approach to explore multiple materials and cultures each day. Whether it’s a home for a human, a secret hideout for a mythical creature or a shelter for a favorite pet, design inspirations are explored through the interactive process of character creation, storytelling, making and drawing.

WHAT IS A WICKED PROBLEM?
A wicked problem is a problem that is difficult or impossible to solve because of incomplete, contradictory, and changing requirements that are often difficult to recognize. Wickedness isn’t a degree of difficulty. Wicked issues are different because traditional processes can’t resolve them. A wicked problem has innumerable causes, is tough to describe, and doesn’t have one right answer. Environmental degradation, homelessness and poverty are classic examples of wicked problems. They’re the opposite of hard but ordinary problems, which people can solve in a finite time period by applying standard techniques. Not only do conventional processes fail to tackle wicked problems, but they may exacerbate situations by generating undesirable consequences.

HOW DO WE DO IT?
We approach wicked problems by first introducing a particular culture.  For example, for the Tatami House, we will visit Japanese culture and wood construction; for the Tolec Clay House we look at clay/mud and straw structures and Central African cultures. Students then apply their knowledge to design and construct their own iteration (or several iterations). This basic structure gives us ample opportunity to explore issues of citizenship and community while maintaining personalization and individual growth.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Wicked Workshop seeks enthusiastic, creative, design-minded educators to join our team. This position requires a sincere love of teaching elementary children K-5th grade.  Our ideal candidate will flaunt a growth-mindset, majestically parade a can-do attitude and believe in the power of theatrical performance as a motivator for both creativity and classroom culture.

We wholeheartedly encourage instructors from various backgrounds including parents with design backgrounds who are looking for something creative and worthwhile, former educators, aspiring educators, empty nesters, freelance designers, youth group and community leaders; those who want to help further the mission of design thinking and independent learning in elementary education.

Wicked Workshop teachers are responsible for leading hands-on, arts-based after school classes and will work with students to develop, encourage and illuminate their ideas. Our philosophy for self-directed learning positions the teacher as the mentor, not the maker. Our teachers inspire, invigorate, celebrate and document student’s work.

This is a part-time position requiring a commitment of 10-15 hours per week . Our program is entirely mobile and our teachers drive to schools to teach on different campuses in the Austin area.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Being 100% fanatical about timeliness and attendance.

Availability from 2:30-5:30 Monday - Friday (can be fewer days if needed)

The ability to transport and lift a loaded Teaching Kit of approximately 32”x18”x14” and approximately 40
pounds maximum into and out of your vehicle to the classroom. All materials, including a rolling cart will be provided.

Deliver a full class independently from start to finish including meeting and guiding children to the classroom, set up, instruction and clean up.

Establish a positive and inclusive classroom culture

Maintain consistent and timely communication

Semester-long teaching commitments are required

WHAT DOES A REGULAR DAY LOOK LIKE?

Ideally, we are looking for folks who can teach every day of the week.  Each week, you would teach the same curriculum at a different school each day and we have a new project each week. We will work to group your set of schools as near your home as possible.

Before your class, you will receive a trunk (32”x18”x14”) of materials with a video projector and a memory stick with the project video.

You will typically arrive at the school between 2:30 - 2:45, check in with the front office, gather your students and walk them to the classroom. You'll show the project video and hand out the materials. During the making process, you'll offer guidance and support based on what you learned in training. You'll stop class about 4:35 for clean up. Most classes end at 4:45 and parents will arrive for pickup. Each school procedure varies slightly.
You'll need to do a final clean up which includes collecting and storing materials and tools, sweeping and wiping down tables.

You should be leaving the school between 5:00-5:15.

We will work out a convenient method for giving and receiving supplies and videos.

HOW MUCH DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ARCHITECTURE?

Detailed knowledge of architecture is not required.  We are teaching the design process and how to approach problem solving through design thinking - all of which we will teach you in training.

The actual project prompt and curriculum will be delivered to students via a short project video that you will show at the beginning of class. You will be responsible for distribution of materials and guiding an open-ended design process where each student will create their own version of the project.  We do not teach step-by-step procedures, but we do teach modelling techniques from time to time.  If we are teaching a modelling technique, it will be simple and included in the project video.

Our teachers are cheerleaders and mentors - there to guide students to the next level of thinking through the design process, overcome minor obstacles in making or help students see their work from a different point of view.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Preferred (but not required) candidates will have completed or be currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in an education or design related field such as education, fine art, architecture, interior design or design thinking.

Candidates must have a minimum of 1 year of experience with classroom management and/or teaching/coaching/mentoring elementary level children

Candidates must exhibit an excellent ability to engage children through dynamic and passionate action.

Candidates must be able to quickly jump into independent teaching following training.

High School Diploma required

Valid Driver’s License Required

WHAT WE OFFER:

You will work with a fellow co-teacher, so there will always be another adult in the room to have your back!

Wicked Workshop classes are mobile!  We teach on various campuses using school facilities which requires our teachers to transport and lift a loaded Teaching Kit of approximately 32”x18”x14” and approximately 40 pounds maximum into and out of your vehicle to the classroom. Are you able to accommodate this arrangement? *
If I am selected for a position, I understand that I am responsible for arranging transportation regardless of proximity to my current or future home address. *
Please consider this scenario and let us know how you might respond: On the first day of Wicked Workshop, we hand out Client Cards with clients such as  Elmer Fudd, The Queen of England, Jack Sparrow or a random cat family.  The students are asked to design a house for their client. It can be any kind of house - as  long as it relates somehow to their client. The catch? They must keep the client they are randomly given, as architects rarely get to choose their clients. No trading or replacing cards. While the cards are handed out, students start giggling. You look over and see that the quiet 6-year-old boy is visibly upset; he received the Blue Mermaid card. He asks to trade cards with his friend and starts to tear up.  What do you do? *
Please consider this scenario and let us know how you might respond: Today’s project is to build a birdhouse out of unconventional “found” objects, like a bird would do. One of your best students looks upset – her birdhouse is “terrible” and she’s tossed it in the garbage can.  What do you do? *
Please consider this scenario and let us know how you might respond:  There’s a boy in your class who really doesn’t want to be there – his parent signed him up and he isn’t very interested.  He typically plays around and rarely builds the project that was intended – rather, he likes to sit and build “shooters” or swords.  He usually keeps to himself, but today, his friend decides to build a shooter too and they are sword fighting in the back of the room.  What do you do? *
Wicked Workshop uses a background check system required by Austin Independent School District (AISD). I understand that my employment offer can be rescinded pending the results of my background check. I will be provided an opportunity to disclose any prior convictions at the time of my orientation, but know that an official start date will not be determined until my results have cleared through AISD. *
Please add anything else that you feel is important for us to know about you or your situation that we haven't asked.  It's OK to leave this blank.
Thank you for applying! To be fully considered for a Wicked Workshop position, please send your resume and a cover letter to Fifi Henderson at  fifi@wickedworkshop.org with the subject line “Pick Me!”. If you have a portfolio, please include a link to it showcasing both your work and student work if available. If you don’t have a portfolio, don’t fret!  A portfolio is not required. We look forward to hearing from you! *
