[Past Event] Tuesday, April 16th: Climate Policy and the Energy Transition: Evidence-based Approaches from the Social Sciences
Lecture by Edson Severnini (Carnegie Mellon University)

Designing effective climate policy requires (i) quantifying climate impacts, (ii) understanding channels of climate adaptation; and (iii) identifying fruitful mitigation strategies such as the energy transition. This public lecture will focus on how behavioral responses may alter the biological, chemical, and physical effects of climate change; how market and policy incentives trigger adaptive behavior that may affect the longer-term impacts of climatic change; and how key economic trade-offs may shape the energy transition.

Lecture by Max Boykoff (University of Colorado)

In 2024, conversations about climate change in our lives and at the science-policy interface – as pathways to engagement and action – can get stuck. This talk will highlight what kinds of climate communications work where, when, why, how, and under what conditions in interlocking communication ecosystems. This talk will touch on news-based communications about climate change, and then explore the power of creative climate communications at multiple scales and contexts in order to more effectively influence attitudinal and behavioral changes.
Thursday, April 25th: Decarbonization and Human Psychology

Lecture by Shahzeen Attari (Indiana University)

Solutions to climate change rest on science, technology, political will, and public support. This public lecture describes efforts from the Attari lab that address problems related to human behavior, resource use, and climate change. Using methods that have strong links to environmental and psychological science, highlights from research ranging from perceptions of household-level energy use to state- and country-level energy mixes, and ways to correct misperceptions will be presented. What motivating factors for decarbonization solutions need to be addressed? This talk will end with a brief overview of ongoing work that deals with low carbon technology uptake.
