As a class, we settled on a teaching model in which the majority of class time was devoted to lecture, but with some puzzles and other interactivity. If I could take this course again, I would prefer:

In terms of activities, we focused on solo and small-group puzzles and challenge problems, with some time devoted to 'troubleshooting' and worked examples. If I could take this course again, I would like to see:

Question 3: Grading Philosophy
In the first class, we distinguished the traditional 'effort-based' grading scheme, in which all work submitted is incorporated into the final grade and weighted according to its scope, from 'standards-based' grading, in which the final grade is based on demonstrating mastery in the course objectives by the end of the course.

After some discussion, we settled on a grading model that approximated traditional weighting, but in which certain hard problems reappeared on the final. Doing better on those problems then 'overwrites' previous grades on related questions.
