We the undersigned, are shocked at the police brutality and unleashing of paramilitary forces on peacefully protesting students of JNU on 18 November 2019. The voicing of student grievance against the substantial hostel fee hike is a genuine worry for a residential university. It is appalling that these concerns have been answered by brute force on students, teachers and press attempting to cover it.
JNU has nurtured excellence and offered leadership in various fields precisely because it enabled a higher education space that was open to bright minds irrespective of their socio-economic backgrounds. Fees are not the only way students contribute to a university and its character. The unique cultural-educational space of JNU has been created by the diversity of its students, who have since its inception, contributed to the making of it. The overriding of student and teachers concerns by administrative authoritarianism smacks of an agenda for the cultural destruction of university spaces. Fee hike, self financing model of education and loan based education reduce the world of ideas to a coterie who can pay and repay. It makes educational spaces into commercial centers and eventually impoverishes the world of ideas, academia and larger cultural life. We are concerned at emerging privatizing policies and trends that indicate towards a dismal cultural future. We express solidarity with the students, teachers and other sections struggling for keeping education open to all and find public funding of education a well deserved investment of tax payers money.
The injuries caused to protesting JNU students is a testimony to the assault on public funded education. We strongly condemn the curbing of dissent by the university administration, the deployment of police and paramiltary forces in and around university campuses, the brutal assault on the protestors and the extreme high handedness with which the government is attacking higher education and opening it up for privatization.
We demand,
    1. The concerns of all university stakeholders must be taken into account by the administration.
    2. Action must be taken against the police personnel who were involved in attacking peaceful protestors, which included a visually challenged student, who was hurled and stamped upon.
    3. An end to the maligning of JNU and its students by an ill informed section of the media who are aligning with politically motivated campaigns for destroying public universities.
    4. The government must ensure the cultural health of the future by not promoting privatization policies and instead spend public funds on education.

जे एन यू पर हमले के विरोध में और शिक्षा पर सरकारी खर्च के समर्थन में बयान  

हम सब सब 18 नवम्बर 2018  को जवाहर लाल नेहरू  विश्वविद्यालय के शान्तिपूर्ण प्रदर्शन कर रहे विद्यार्थियों पर अर्धसैनिक बलों और पुलिस के बर्बर हमले से सन्न हैं. छात्रावास की फीस में बेतहाशा बढ़ोत्तरी किसी भी आवासीय विश्वविद्यालय के विद्यार्थियों के लिए वास्तविक चिंता का विषय है. अत्यंत दुखद बात है कि इन सरोकारों का जवाब  विद्यार्थियों, शिक्षकों और पत्रकारों पर पाशविक हमले से दिया गया. 

जे  एन यू ने विभिन्न क्षेत्रों में उत्कृष्टता बनाये रखने और नेतृत्व प्रदान करनेमें इसीलिये सफलता हासिल की क्योंकि इसने सभी विद्यार्थियों को, उनकी समाजार्थिक पृष्ठभूमि की परवाह किये बिना, अध्ययन का खुला मंच प्रदान किया. किसी भी विश्व विद्यालय और उसके चरित्र में विद्यार्थियों का योगदान केवल उनके द्वारा दी गयी फीस से नहीं आंका जाना चाहिए. जे एन यू का विलक्षण शैक्षिक परिवेश उसके विद्यार्थियों की विविधता से बना है जिन्होंने इसके जन्म से ही इसे बनाने में अपना योग दिया है. विद्यार्थियों और अध्यापकों के सरोकारों का गला घोंट देने के लिए प्रशासन ने जो तानाशाही पूर्ण रवैया अपनाया है, उसका मकसद विश्वविद्यालयी शिक्षा के अवसर को तबाह कर देना है. फीस वृद्धि, शिक्षा के स्ववित्तीकरण और कर्ज आधारित शिक्षा के कारण विचारों की दुनिया पर उन्हीं लोगों का कब्जा हो जाता है जो शिक्षा खरीद सकते हैं. इससे शिक्षा केंद्र व्यापारिक अड्डों में बदल जाएंगे और विचारों की दुनिया शिक्षा जगत और व्यापक सांस्कृतिक माहौल में दरिद्रता व्याप्त हो जाएगी. हम ऐसे निजीकरण के अभियान से चिंतित हैं जिससे सांस्कृतिक भविष्य पर कालिख पुत जाएगी. हम विद्यार्थियों, अध्यापकों और उन अन्य तबकों के साथ अपनी एकजुटता जाहिर करते हैं जो शिक्षा को सर्वसुलभ बनाने के लिए संघर्षरत हैं और शिक्षा पर धन खर्च करने को टैक्स देने वालों के धन का उचित उपयोग मानते हैं. 

जे एन यू के विद्यार्थियों को लगी चोटें सरकारी अनुदान से मिलाने वाली शिक्षा पर चोट हैं. विश्वविद्यालय प्रशासन द्वारा अभिव्यक्ति की आजादी पर रोक लगाने, विश्वविद्यालय परिसर में और उसके आस-पास अर्ध सैनिक बलों की मौजूदगी, प्रदर्शनकारियों पर बर्बर हमले तथा सरकार द्वारा निजीकरण के पक्ष में ऊपर से फैसला थोप देने की हम कड़ी निंदा करते हैं. 

हम मांग करते हैं: 
१: विश्वविद्यालय से जुड़े सभी लोगों की चिंताओं पर विश्वविद्यालय प्रशासन ध्यान दे. 
२: शांतिपूर्ण प्रदर्शनकारियों, जिनमें एक दृष्टिबाधित विद्यार्थी भी था, पर हमला करने वाले पुलिस अधिकारियों पर  कार्यवाही की जाय. 
३: कूपमंडूक मीडिया के एक हिस्से द्वारा जे एन यू व उसके विद्यार्थियों की छवि धूमिल करने की कोशिशों पर तत्काल रोक लगाई जाय जो निहित राजनीतिक तत्वों के साथ मिलकर सार्वजनिक विश्वविद्यालयों को तबाह करने पर आमादा हैं. 
४: सरकार सुखद सांस्कृतिक भविष्य के लिए निजीकरण की नीतियों को त्याग कर उसके बदले में शिक्षा पर सरकारी खर्च बढाए.
