Our founder, Dan Kimberg, founded Student U with the spirit of his grandfather, Sam Kimberg. Sam Kimberg strived to bring joy to every space he entered through playing songs on a kazoo, wearing funny hats and celebrating every single moment “being with” others. The Joy to the Word line, bigs ups and standing O’s are all inspired by his spirit.

The past few months have been challenging times for our community. For the first time in 12 years, there was no physical “Joy to the World” line or huge Big Ups in Taylor Hall. As we all are learning to navigate a new world with stay-at-home orders and wearing masks, we want to make sure the Sam Kimberg spirit is still alive. I believe if Sam Kimberg were alive today, he would use his kazoo to continue to bring joy to the world playing his kazoo in front lawns, parks and parking lots.

Despite not being physically present with each other, we would still like to celebrate a person in our community who has brought joy to our community. This joy may have come through TikTok videos, drive by parades or service to our community. The award recipient will have consistently embodied all of the Student U core values and inspired others at Student U or their community through their actions. Without this individual, Student U would feel extremely different.

Who has brought the most joy to your community?

The winner will be featured in the book “Sam’s School”, will receive a kazoo and will have his/her name added to the award plaque.  All nominations must be received by Sunday, July 26 at midnight. Nominations can be submitted via this form or through video submission to Ms. April (april.warren@studentudurham.org or 919-808-5791).

The winner will be announced at Student U's virtual end of summer celebration on Friday, July 31st at 11:00 am.

Sam Kimberg se esforzó por brindar alegría a cada espacio al que ingresó tocando canciones en un kazoo, usando sombreros divertidos y celebrando cada momento "estar con" los demás. A pesar de no estar físicamente presentes el uno con el otro, aún nos gustaría celebrar a una persona en nuestra comunidad que ha traído alegría a nuestra comunidad. Esta alegría puede haber llegado a través de videos de TikTok, caravanas o por el servicio a nuestra comunidad. El ganador del premio es alguien que ha incorporado constantemente todos los valores fundamentales de Student U e inspirado a otros en Student U o su comunidad a través de sus acciones. Sin este individuo, Student U se sentiría extremadamente diferente.

¿Quién ha traído la mayor alegría a su comunidad?

El ganador aparecerá en el libro "Sam’s School", recibirá un kazoo y se agregará su nombre a la placa. Todas las nominaciones deben recibirse antes del domingo 26 de julio a la medianoche.
