Board Member Candidate Information

The Rape Recovery Center is a non-profit organization with the mission to empower those victimized by sexual violence through advocacy, crisis intervention, and therapy and to educate the community about the cause, impact, and prevention of sexual violence. Since 1974 the center has been serving survivors throughout the state of Utah and educating the community in Salt Lake County. As our community continues to grapple with the impact of sexual violence, our message of hope, healing, and recovery is as relevant and important as ever before.  

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Rape Recovery Center (RRC) Board Member. Becoming a board member is a considerable commitment as we strive to meet the growing need for our services. The information below provides a brief overview of this responsibility. The process of becoming a board member includes:

1) Complete the attached information
2) Meet with member(s) from the RRC Board Recruitment Committee
3) If approved, your application will be submitted to the Board for vote
4) If approved, you will be invited to attend Board Orientation
5) Attend Board meetings as a voting member

General Board Duties

• Keep the organization’s mission current
• Set policies and adopt plans for the organizations operations
• Approve the budget, establish fiscal policies and financial controls, and monitor the financial position of the organization
• Provide adequate resources for the organization through establishment of resource-development goals & commitment of fund-raising through giving and soliciting
• Develop organizational visibility through networking and creating linkages in the community
• Ensure that the organizations’ corporate and governance documents are updated and secured, and all reports are filed as required
• Recruit and select new board members and provide them with an orientation to the board’s business
• Recruit, hire, evaluate, reward or terminate, if necessary, the Executive Director
• Protect and preserve the organization’s non-profit tax-exempt status
• Assure board effectiveness
• The board term commitment of one term is two years with an opportunity to extend for a second term and/or third term. See the Bylaws for more information.

Required Attendance and Involvement

• The RRC Board meets every month on the fourth Thursday at the center (or virtually) from 5:30 to 7:00 pm.
• Absence from 3 meetings per year is considered a resignation.
• Come prepared to participate. Read materials sent out before the meeting and bring your Board Handbook to refer to if needed.
• Don’t hold back on sharing your knowledge and views because you are a “new board member.” Boards are most effective when members share different perspectives. Differences can help the Board reach the best decision.
• Board members are asked to participate on committees as they arise. Committees will be enacted when projects arise.
• Leadership opportunities within the board are available as each year we work to fulfill terms on our executive committee. Involvement in RRC activities and with committees helps communicate your individual interest in serving as an officer of the organization on the executive committee.
• Each board member is asked to provide a minimum yearly contribution to the organization of $1,000. This can be done as a direct donation, or as a personal fundraising effort, or an in-kind donation. Each board member will work with the Board Chair, Executive Director, and Development Director to create their fundraising plan.
