BASIN+ Application 2024

BASIN+ - A Fun Way to Learn About Water-Focused Careers

BASIN is the Urban Conservancy’s environmental literacy and stewardship program for children. Our new offering, BASIN+, introduces children aged 11-14 to career and internship opportunities they can pursue when they’re older, and the knowledge and skills they’ll need to get where they want to go.

The green sector is a growing set of fields focused on the environment, and on helping us meet the challenges of a changing climate. Many of these jobs earn family supportive incomes, do not require a four-year degree to pursue, and cannot be outsourced to another community. They’re careers that are all about making New Orleans a better place to live. There are so many things we can explore together–we want to see what your kids want to learn!

The program will meet in Sojourner Truth Neighborhood Center one Saturday a month from 11am-1pm. Lunch and a stipend for participating will be provided.

Participants will do activities, hear from guest speakers, and go on trips that meet their interests within the topic of water: Our infrastructure, our environment, and chances to be part of the solution–now, and in the future.

Our first few sessions will be planned by the facilitator, and then informed by participant interest.

BASIN programming is:

  • Safe

  • Learner-centered

  • Place-based (we teach about things that matter to New Orleanians!)

  • Creative

  • Fun!

Food and Stipend:

Pizza or another, similar lunch will be provided at each meeting. If your child has dietary restrictions, please tell us in the medical section. Your child may also bring their own food if they prefer.

Your child will also receive a $20 stipend for attendance at each meeting.

General Activities:

BASIN+ is a chance for your child to learn about opportunities for them in high school and beyond, directly from the people who provide those opportunities. We’ll host special guests to talk about internships and jobs, and do activities that demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed to pursue training and careers. Activities will often venture outdoors.

Participation in BASIN+ necessitates participation in all required activities. If your child requires special medical or mobility accommodations, please tell us in the medical section. We do NOT want any child to be left out because of a medical issue!

Attendance:

We will meet one Saturday a month at the Sojourner Truth Center from 11am - 1pm. We understand that families are busy, and that you won’t be able to make every session. We ask that participating families do their best to RSVP accurately to each meeting (so we can make sure to have lunch and stipends for them!).
