Expression of Interest - 2024 School Steer Spectacular

This Expression of Interest form outlines some pre-requisites that your school will require or is working towards to enable participation in this event.

To facilitate your participation, South Coast Beef™ (SCB) may be able to assist your school with sourcing steers as well as advise your school on the appropriate infrastructure required to house and handle your cattle.

The Spectacular will be conducted at Nowra Showground over the 7th and 8th May 2024. Schools participating in this event should aim to have steers housed at their school from the start of term 1, 2024.

Unfortunately, a Google Classroom built by a non DET email host cannot invite DET or education email addresses to be students or teachers in the GC. We ask that you please supply a personal, non-DET or non-NSW education email for us to add you to the Google Classroom, and we sincerely apologise for this multiple email need! Any major correspondence will still be conducted through your DET email.

This should be available via your MLA log in by clicking on 'linked accounts' and selecting 'LPA'.

LPA Accreditation

If you answered NO to being LPA accredited and wish to participate in the 2024 Steer Spectacular, please go to https://www.integritysystems.com.au/on-farm-assurance/livestock-product-assurance/ to get your school accredited. This will enable your school to complete a National Vendor Declaration (NVD), required for the movement of all cattle onto and off your school property. You will need a PIC to apply for LPA accreditation.

Does your school have a teacher of agriculture or primary industries who is able to manage, conduct, or supervise your animals' needs for this project?

This includes daily feeding, checking availability of clean fresh water, and a minimum of daily checking of the animals’ health and welfare during the 90-100 day feeding and training period.

Please keep in mind that this period includes a responsible party attending to the animals’ daily requirements over the Easter and first term breaks.

South Coast Beef™ is able to advise on and may be able to assist with procurement of some infrastructure requirements. Additionally, as part of the reporting for the competition, students will be required to report on the infrastructure in place to house and train the steers and why this is appropriate. If you require assistance to source cattle and/or set up facilities to house cattle and participate, please complete the 'request for assistance' form that will be available following submission of the current Expression of Interest.

Please indicate if your school has the following:

A ramp for unloading and loading cattle onto a truck

A ramp for unloading and loading cattle onto a trailer

Access to a trailer that would be adequate for loading and transporting two steers (this must be an enclosed trailer with an access ramp like a horse float).

Enclosure/s with adequate fencing, shade, and water. This only need be a small yard (minimum 10x10 metres) however a larger fenced paddock or yard may be required to train the animals to lead.

A race and/or crush for intensive handling of cattle. I.e. catching and tethering animals for lead training as well as application of any medications if required.

Appropriately sized and cleanable water troughs to ensure a consistent supply of fresh clean water to the cattle.

Vermin proof storage for feed including the Dried Distillers Grain (DDG) supplied as part of the competition and required roughage such as hay. One Tonne of DDG will be provided free of charge for each exhibit in the competition. Schools are required to make arrangements to collect this on an allocated time/day from Bomaderry. SCB may be able to assist with this upon timely request.

Troughs and hay feeders appropriate for feeding cattle at a minimum of a daily basis
