Naperville is stuck in a contract that means every time you pay your electricity bill you are helping to finance the burning of coal. In fact, over 70% of our electricity comes from coal, and unless you can put solar panels on your house, right now you have no choice in the source of your electricity.
But just because Naperville is obligated to purchase electricity from IMEA until 2035 does not mean we are powerless to reduce our dependence on this dirty fossil fuel.
- Naperville can use its influence with IMEA to speed the transition to clean energy, and that influence will be the greatest during contract renewal negotiations, which will start in 2024 or 2025.
- Naperville can set policy that ensures widespread local adoption of solar, reducing our dependence on IMEA.
- Naperville can strengthen building energy efficiency codes, reward developers planning net-zero buildings, or otherwise incentivize energy efficiency.
- And more!
None of this will happen without Naperville residents showing up and speaking up. And transitioning to clean energy is not our only goal for this year.
NEST's 2023 focus is building community engagement to create political will. This community meeting is another step in skill-building in these areas so that we can make progress on all of our sustainability goals, including expanding recycling and composting.
This special meeting will be in person, with a social half-hour at the start. We'll have cookies; please bring your own beverage in a reusable container.
At the end of the meeting, attendees will participate in an action to build political will, such as sending letter or taking a survey.
