Hethel Track Day - Safety Briefing
Welcome to the Hethel trackdays event in support of the Autistic Driver Academy. It is important to us that everyone has enjoyable, but safe time with us. Please read and understand the briefing notes below. These describe how the day will be run and what is expected of you and others and it is the rules we will apply on the day. You will need to read all sections to complete the briefing and complete the final page. Without this you will not be allowed on track on the day.

If you have any issues on the day please come and see us, there will be several members of staff available across the day. We are able to sort most things out if we know about them. What we cannot do is correct them later, on Social Media.

Also, no matter how emotional a situation might be, it can be resolved far quicker if it can be explained or relayed in a calm manner.

The Day Begins *
The day will start with sighting laps at 9:00am. Once sighting laps are completed we will hold a 15 minute novice session, so that those new to track driving and to the circuit may go out and experience the circuit without undue pressure from more experienced drivers. We ask you obey the spirit of this session and do not go out if you do not fall into that category.  Note that if any stoppage happens during this session we cannot extend the time. The session will end after 15 minutes and the chequered flag will be shown. After this session the day will move to open pit lane driving. This means that you may enter and leave the track as you see fit providing there is space on the circuit. Lunch is 12:30 till 1:30. If there is any change to that it will be communicated on the day. The track will close for driving at 5pm. Please answer the question below.

Prior to going on track
There will be a static noise test before going on track. This limit is 105dB. Noise limit is 101dB drive by. It is rare for a car to fail this noise limit. However, if you do, you will be allowed an opportunity to reduce the noise level. If however, you are unable to reliably reduce your car's noise level you will be prevented from further use of that car on track. If it is you daily driven car that fails this limit, your neighbours will write us thankyou letters.

You will also need your helmet on and done up, arms and legs to be covered and wristband, which you should show to the pit lane exit marshal every time you go on circuit.
If you are in a convertible car, you will need a full face helmet unless the car has a ridged (hard) roof and you drive with the roof closed.
Sighting Laps
Sighting laps are your opportunity to see the circuit layout, entry to and from circuit and to see where the marshals posts are that will be use to signal to you throughout the day.

You will be led round by a course car at reduced pace, for 3 laps. (twice past the pits) Please follow line astern. Do not leave excessive gaps during sighting laps, firstly you will lose the line that you are being shown, secondly you will look a prat. We will laugh and point at you and everyone in cars following you will hate you. Sighting laps are not intended for warming tyres.

THERE IS NO OVERTAKING ON SIGHTING LAPS. (Unless a car is forced to pull over or spins in front of you)

Flags and Flag Signals
Flag signals, their meaning and what action to take.

Flags are the only way we can communicate with you once on circuit. If you see a flag being waved, it is not the marshal trying to stay warm, YOU MUST NOT IGNORE IT.
Yellow Flag *
There is a situation ahead that needs your full attention. You must reduce your speed so that you are fully in control of your car and can stop if necessary. It could be, and usually is, a car broadside across the track around the next corner. Do not immediately jump on the brakes unless the incident is happening right in front of you, as it is possible cars behind have not seen the flag. THERE IS NO OVERTAKING. Please answer the question below.

Red Flag *
The situation is more serious, and we need to clear the circuit. Complete your lap at reduce speed (Half speed is fine, there is no need to crawl round unless directed by marshals). Come into the pit lane at the first opportunity. THERE IS NO OVERTAKING. Please answer the question below

Red and Yellow Striped Flag *
This flag is / may be used to indicate a change of surface conditions. If you see it, give it great respect. It means the grip level will have changed from the previous lap. Most commonly on a track day it is because a car has left the circuit and dragged mud back onto the tarmac. Reduce your speed through that part of the circuit and do not try to put the car on its door handles until you have understood what the issue is. Failure to do this is likely that the car may be literally on the door handles in the field or barrier.

Blue Flag *
There is faster traffic behind you. Please follow the Overtaking and Passing rule:- We allow overtaking on our trackdays. We do so by three simple rules. Overtake on the LEFT only! Overtake on the STRAIGHTS only! Overtake by CONSENT only!

Black Flag *
We need to have a word with you! Treat it as your own Red flag and reduce speed. Come into the pit lane at the first opportunity and we will tell you the situation. Please do not disappear straight into the paddock. If we have to come and find you it makes us extra grumpy. Reasons for a black flag include:- Exceeding noise limits. Mechanical issues such as dropping fluids, bodywork falling off. Mainly however it is because we need to talk about your manner of driving. We are not draconian, understanding what the problem is and accepting the results in a friendly way will see you back on track very quickly. Being an arse takes far longer to get back on circuit.

Overtaking Rules
We allow overtaking on our trackdays. We do so by three simple rules.
Overtake on the LEFT only!
Overtake on the STRAIGHTS only!
Overtake by CONSENT only!

To avoid anyone getting a black flag I will give the layman’s interpretation of these 3 rules.
The LEFT is the side most people hold their fork in and is generally the opposite side of the car to the side you are sitting!
Straights are when you steering wheel is straight ahead. If you have 20 degrees of lock on, it is not a straight!
Consent. This is the important one. We do not operate “I’m so fast everyone must get out of my way” or the Senna principal of “if you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver.” Overtaking is a two-way thing. Consent means that if you are the faster car, then you wait for the driver in front to see you are behind and clear move over to the left to allow you to pass. It does not mean just because you are faster the driver in front must immediately swerve out of your way and be in awe of your driving ability.

If you are the car being overtaken then when you see faster traffic behind, you should allow that car past WHEN IT IS SAFE to do so. The easiest way to do this is on the exit of a corner. As you exit the corner, just maintain your speed or stay off the gas pedal. Indicate to the right, using indicators or a polite hand signal and move clearly to the right. Once the faster car(s) have gone by you can pick up your pace again. It may come as a shock to BMW drivers that you do actually have indicators and a reminder to all Caterham type cars that you can turn your right-hand indicator off before the chequered flag at the end of the day.
On a very serious note, we do police our days to these standards of overtaking. We expect faster drivers to wait for the consent of the car in front to overtake. There is NO overtaking in braking zones. A braking zone is when the car in front brake lights come on for the corner. You must also make an allowance that the car in front may brake earlier than you. If you have any issues on the day, please come and tell us, we cannot watch everywhere, and we will address the situation. It is pointless getting angry, as you will do something silly and you will be the one getting talked to. And no, I don't want to see your video. Equally if you are the “slower” car we do expect you allow faster traffic by. Regardless of how many “powhas” you have and how quickly those MX-5’s disappear in your mirror when you got on a straight, if you find that same MX-5 behind you, or any other car behind you for a couple of corners, (not a couple of laps) then accept it is faster than you and you should let in by when safe to do so.

Final point on overtaking. It is a shock to many people just how fast an MX-5, Clio or some other cruddy car that does not have a German badge can lap on circuit. What is not a surprise however is that their straight line  acceleration is tepid to say the least. If cars are behind you but need to pass, help them out on the straights by lifting off. It will make the day so much nicer for everyone.

Other Important Stuff
Remove all loose items from your car before going on circuit. MK1 MX-5 drivers, ensure your battery is secure, they like to make a bid for freedom through the rear wing. DO NOT carry any fuel cans in your boot on circuit! Should be obvious, but people have done it!

ENTRY TO THE TRACK. There will be a marshal at controlling entry to track. Entry is on somewhat of a blind corner so it is very important that you obey the circuit entry marshal.

EXIT FROM THE TRACK. Please indicate you intention to leave the track and enter the paddock ahead of time.  Once you have done so DO NOT change your mind and decide to carry on. Once you have signalled you MUST come off the circuit end enter back in the normal way.

RED FLAG SITUATIONS. If a red flag is shown and the circuit must be cleared, it is important that when you exit the track you don't attempt any parking manoeuvres that would block anyone else leaving the track.

PASSENGER HAND POSITION. We frequently see passengers, particularly MX-5's, where the passenger holds on to the windscreen rail. We consider this a dangerous practice and you will be black flagged if this is seen. Please ensure any passenger keeps their hands in a safe position.

PADDOCK SPEED LIMIT.  We insist on a 10mph maximum speed and take a very dim view of ANY EXCESSIVE SPEED in the Paddock. We have had a serious incident in a circuit paddock with someone being "stupid" and we are quite prepared to send anyone home who breaks this rule.

Please be aware that you will be putting more strain on your car than normal road use. Keep an eye on things such as oil level, tyres and brakes. Do not be tempted to push your car that bit further if the tyres are getting sketchy or the brake pedal has gone long. It seldom ends well.

If you do have any mechanical issues on track, particularly if you think you are dropping fluids, please stop the car as soon as you can by slowing down and pulling off the circuit. It is far, far quicker to clear the track and recover you than it is to have to clear up oil or coolant that you drop trying to make it back to the pits.

If you do have a problem on track and have to stop. Please stay in your car with seatbelts and helmet on until we can get to you unless you have come to a stop is what you judge to be a dangerous position, in which case get out of the car and over the nearest safety barrier. Do not wander around and start looking under the car or bonnet.

IF YOU SPIN on track (or off it) please come in on that lap and address any issue that may have caused the problem. Refer to point two above.

Equally, if you have contact with any of the circuit furniture, no mater how slight, you must come in and be assessed by the medics on site before you will be allowed back on circuit.

If things are starting to get emotional on track, red mist is not good for you or your car. Please come in, have a cup of tea, if it is really emotional, I will buy it for you. Let the “pressure” off and don’t ruin your day. If you need to tell us about any problems, please do so.

FILMING. In car cameras and filming and taking pictures of any nature is prohibited at Hethel. It is not an open access circuit but a test facility and proving ground. As with all test facilities filming is prohibited. Any breach of this rule may result in you being removed from site. Please obey this rule and so not be tempted to take any "sneaky" pictures.

LIVE LAP TIMING IS PROHIBITED. Track days are classed as non-competitive events. Motorsport authorities, insurers, both mine and yours all take a dim view of this as do we. If we see any live lap timing equipment in operation on circuit or in the pit lane you will be prevented to any further participation in the day and no compensation will be given. If you have a hard wired in lap timer on your car, you will need to cover the display with tape. *
