Volunteer Job Description
Purpose: A court-appointed trained volunteer promotes and protects the best interests of an abuse or neglected child.
Qualifications
1. Be 21 years of age or older.
2. Have the ability to commit to the program for at least eighteen months.
3. Must participate in 27 hours of pre-service training, independent study, 10 hours of court observation,
and consent to a criminal records check.
4. Have the ability to work with a child, family members and professionals using tact, objectivity, and
concern.
5. Have the ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
6. Have an interest in children, their rights, welfare, and special needs.
7. Have reliable transportation and access to technology.
8. A CASA volunteer must not be related to any parties involved in the case assigned to him or her or
employed in a position and/or agency that might result in a conflict of interest.
Duties
1. To make an independent investigation of the case and the needs of a child.
2. Visit the child/ren on the assigned case at least once a month.
3. To determine possible resources within the family and community to meet the child’s needs.
4. To be present at all court hearings to present information and make recommendations.
5. To assure that a permanent placement plan is being implemented for a child when removed from the
custody of his/her parents or guardian.
6. To monitor the progress of the case and report problems to the court.
7. To maintain complete confidentiality regarding information about the child, as well as information
regarding other parties involved in the case.
8. To attend pre-service and in-service training.
9. To prepare required reports in a timely manner.
10. To report any new incidents of child abuse or neglect to the Advocacy Coordinator and appropriate
authorities.
11. To contact your CASA supervisor and other parties involved in the case regularly.
12. To exhibit professionalism in behavior and appearance.
