If visiting between June-Novemeber it will be hurricane season during your residency, which means chaos could happen.  We often lose power for a day or more due to storms, streets could flood (cars get parked on hi-ground). We may have to evacuate but Jacob along with many Aquarium permanent residents don't evacuate until absolutely necessary/ if the powers off more than a week. Would you be able to evacuate, stay with a friend, or what would be your hurricane plan? *

About the Gallery

The Aquarium Gallery and Studios is a collective gallery open to the public.  It is booked separately from the residency. Each month a new artist or group will be selected to use the gallery to display work.  Openings will occur on the 2nd Saturday of each month and the show will remain open until the 1st Sunday of the following month, at which point the work must be deinstalled.  Artists are given keys to the building, 24/7 access to gallery for installation and creative freedom to execute their vision.

We ask that exhibiting artists be prepared to take sole responsibility for their show.  This includes bringing special equipment, like speakers and projectors, assembling your own team of helpers for install/deinstall and coordinating open-hours on the weekends.  The Aquarium Gallery will provide bar/bartending at openings (and closings on request), as well as coordinate facebook events.

About the Residency

The Aquarium Gallery hosts a public gallery, 8-10 private studios, 4 long-term residences and one artist-in-residence live/work studio.  Located in the historic Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans, the gallery is within walking distance of groceries, art stores, bars, restaurants and the French Quarter.

If selected for the Aquarium Gallery Residency, the artist/team will be awarded a live/work studio free of charge.  The length of the residency will be determined based on applications and project proposals, but will be a minimum of 2 weeks but is usually one month.  Artists staying for the full month will have the opportunity to exhibit their work in an open studio to coincide with the Gallery's closing reception.  Regardless of length, artists are encouraged to give a public presentation of their work and actively engage with the Aquarium collective and surrounding art community.

About the Space

The live/work space is a studio apartment with a private bathroom and lofted bed.  The kitchen borders the residence and is fully equipped with pots, pans, a large refrigerator, and a stove/oven, but is communal amongst the studio artists. The room has an overhead ceiling fan, a window AC/ space heater  and plenty of shelves, tables and empty walls for working.  There are 3 large windows throughout the space that provide excellent natural light.  There is a swimming pool and fire pit depending on what season you're selected for.
