Spring 2023 - Math 5B - Calculus Achievement for Success Program Application
**This is not a guaranteed admission into the CAS Math 5B - priority is given to current CAS students enrolled in Math 5B but if there is available space, we will be accepting students into our Math 5B cohort.** If your registration date comes before you hear if there is room in our two Math 5B classes, then please register for a regular Math 5B at the same time as one of our CAS Math 5B classes, and we can easily switch you over if there is room.

Welcome to the Calculus Achievement for Success Program! We are thrilled that you are interested in this free program for PCC students and eager to show you what the program has to offer YOU!.

The CAS program is intended to support STEM majors by building community through peer collaboration, specialized support and teaching strategies, plus some more fun perks along your journey with us. Our goal as a program is to help meet your individual needs as you transition to college math and STEM courses.

In order to help you reach success and to improve your math experience at Pasadena City College, we want to make sure you are aware of the responsibilities of being a member of this program. Keep in mind that all support components are shown to help college students succeed in Calculus.

Commitments List:

1. Attendance is extremely important for success in a college STEM course, especially in Calculus!  To help you be successful through your calculus journey and to receive all the benefits from the CAS program, we expect you to attend class (5 hours/week) and the support course (2.5 hrs/week) consistent.  We want to see you in class every day of class; please know that our office doors are always open should you encounter any speed bumps along the way.  This program is our community and it will only work when we are ALL vested in everyone's success.

2. Tutoring is available to all program participants, and all participants should be willing to attend tutoring sessions through the CAS program or at any PCC STEM Success Center. Tutoring will be required for students who are at risk of failing course or by team member recommendation to improve student understanding.  Remember, our goal is to see you succeed!

3. Be prepared to work hard!  The way we learn is through hard work.  Some days you may feel completely confused -- this is normal, and a sign that your brain is working through the concepts!  Be prepared to work diligently in completing homework assignments and projects, and to see new ways to study and prepare for class. Keep in mind the supplemental instruction will allow some time to complete work with a tutor and classmates.

4. In order to build a sense of community any disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.  We learn best when we treat everyone with courtesy and respect.

5. This program is designed to provide guidance in the field of STEM -- please be open to attend CAS counseling services for career, transfer, personal, strategies for success, and academic advising needs.

The key to the success of the CAS Program is the collaboration among instructors, counselors, success coaches and tutors. This collaboration involves the sharing of program participants’ attendance records and grade reports between instructors and counselors. Please be assured that the CAS Program respects your privacy and all information shared between program staff will be kept strictly confidential.
