ANGARI Foundation, Manatee Lagoon, Friends of Manatee Lagoon, Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management (PBC ERM) and the Lake Worth Lagoon Initiative invite middle and high school educators in Palm Beach County to apply for their summer 2024 teacher workshop! This free program will provide hands-on and immersive STEM education opportunities based on current marine research and conservation efforts around Lake Worth Lagoon and Palm Beach County waters. Participating educators will receive experiences, knowledge, resources and inspiration to share with their students and colleagues.

 Program overview:

ELIGIBILITY: This opportunity is open to middle and high school STEM educators working with students within Palm Beach County. The workshop is provided at no cost to selected participants. Travel & overnight accommodations for the workshop are the responsibility of the participant.  APPLICATIONS DUE MAY 12th, but capacity is limited and slots are open until filled so apply today!
 

TENTATIVE AGENDA:

July 16 (1 PM - 4 PM) - Manatee Lagoon, 6000 N Flagler Dr., West Palm Beach, FL 33407

  • Introduction to program hosts and partners
  • Participant introductions
  • Overview of the Lake Worth Lagoon
  • Agenda review and what to expect for field days

July 17 & 18 (8 AM - 4:30 PM) - [Participants split into two groups that will alternate between A & B Day itineraries outlined below]

A-Day Itinerary - R/V ANGARI departing from Flotilla Club,  4850 N Flagler Dr., West Palm Beach, FL 33407
  • Intro to R/V ANGARI crew and research vessel safety briefing
  • Intro to Coastal Ocean Explorers: Sharks program and partner FIU scientists
  • Participants learn and employ noninvasive methods to study marine life in Lake Worth Lagoon, including baited remote underwater video survey deployment and data evaluation
  • Participants learn and employ additional methods to study marine life, and specifically apex predators, including drumline fishing for sharks and relevant data collection methods
  • Research debrief and sharing of relevant content and resource
  • Note: Lunch and snacks included
B-Day Itinerary - Lake Worth Lagoon location TBD & Manatee Lagoon, 6000 N Flagler Dr., West Palm Beach, FL 33407 
  • Immersive hands-on educational experience in the Lake Worth Lagoon with PBC ERM (locality details to be determined)
  • Lunch 
  • Tour of Manatee Lagoon facility
  • Educational session with Manatee Lagoon demonstrating engaging resources available for teachers both through fieldtrips to the center and virtually by bringing marine science to life in their classrooms
  • Note: Lunch and coffee break included
July 19 (9 AM - Noon)Manatee Lagoon, 6000 N Flagler Dr., West Palm Beach, FL 33407
  • Recap and discussion of workshop experiences and content
  • Host organizations review lessons, activities and resources provided during field days
  • Continued discussion and breakout groups
  • Final review, wrap up and participant feedback
