Welcome to the "Together in Jesus" First Eucharist Sacramental Prep program.  This program is designed to draw your child into a fuller and more active participation in the life of the Church. This means both in its life at Sunday worship and in the daily call to love one another. Your child will become one with Christ by receiving his Body and Blood. Eucharist is the sacrament that both nourishes the individual and creates the community that is the Body of Christ in the world - the Church. So let's begin.
OPENING PRAYER: Let us begin this lesson by gathering at your prayer corner. We will be doing an opening prayer at the beginning of each lesson. The opening prayer helps us to feel closer to God as we learn about, and prepare to receive, the sacrament of First Eucharist.
INTRODUCTION: Preparing to receive First Communion is a big deal! And no matter how many times we receive Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist, it should always be a big deal. Jesus comes to us in a unique way in the Eucharist. When He comes, we receive Him into our body and our soul. This is a very beautiful, personal, and intimate sacrament and something we should never take for granted! It is such a holy, joyful occasion. Our souls become the bride of Christ. That is why girls wear white dresses and boys wear suits. Pope Francis calls the Eucharist the "Sacrament of Love" as "...it constitutes the source of the Church’s life itself. From this sacrament of love, in fact, flows every authentic journey of faith, of communion, and of witness." Today's lesson is the first of six lessons (each lesson is divided into two parts and only one part will be completed each week) in the "Together in Jesus: First Communion" sacrament preparation program that will help you to prepare to receive this "Sacrament of Love." So, let's get started!
I BELONG TO A LOVING COMMUNITY:  First Eucharist is an unforgettable day! It is a benchmark moment in every Catholic's journey into full membership in the Church, a community of believers. Take a moment now and read the paragraph on page 1 in your First Eucharist lesson and then answer the questions below. When you are done with the questions, ask your Mom or Dad to answer the question "I believe in Jesus because..."  Listen carefully to your parents answer and write it in the space provided on page 1. It is important for you to know that others believe in Jesus, and why, and to know that you belong to that community of believers, the Church. Don't forget to send me a picture of your parents answer!!

THE SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION:  Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation are known as the three Sacraments of Initiation. Baptism welcomes new members into the Church and bathes us with water and the life-giving power of Jesus' Death and Resurrection. First Eucharist brings Catholics together to share the Body and Blood of Christ, the regular nourishment of the Church and the heart and summit of the Church's life. And Confirmation seals us with the gift of the Holy Spirit and strengthens our bond with the Church. Take a moment now to turn to page 2 and 3 in your lesson and read more about each of these sacraments and then answer the questions below. When you are done answering the questions, look at the "Seven Sacraments" packet attached to this lesson. Read over the cards, color them in and complete the activities - the matching and word search. Don't forget to send me a picture of your completed work!
In Baptism we become children of ____________?
At Confirmation we are sealed with the gift of the __________ _____________?
Eucharist means ________________?
Jesus made bread and wine signs of his __________ for us that he lived out on the Cross?
GREAT JOB!! The Sacrament of Baptism is an important first step in our faith journey. At Baptism, God's special light comes into our lives, and we become children of God. It is one of the most special days in our lives. One that celebrates our "spiritual birth" into God's family. And just like your real birth, which is celebrated with a birthday every year, so should we celebrate our "spiritual birth" each year. On page 2 of your Together in Jesus lesson take a moment to fill in the "My Baptism" section at the bottom of the page. You will need to know the name you were given at Baptism and when and where you were baptized. So be sure to work with your parents to gather all the information you need.  When you are done be sure to remember to place your shell and water sticker on page 2. Then be sure to send me a picture of your finished work!
FAMILY ACTIVITY: WE GATHER AND CELEBRATE: Our closing activity for your first lesson is a prayer ritual that celebrates the beginning of your preparation for First Eucharist. You will need to gather with your Mom or Dad, or both, to complete the prayer ritual. But before you begin you will need to locate the copy of "The Lord's Prayer" (the Our Father) attached to this lesson and find a piece of ribbon. You will also need a bible or prayer book. When you have all of that gathered, take a minute to fill in your name in the blank provided on "The Lord's Prayer." When you are done roll the prayer sheet up like a scroll, tie it with the ribbon and place it next to the Bible/Prayer Book. Now you are ready to begin your prayer ritual! Turn to page 4 in your lesson. Have your Mom or Dad play the part of "Leader" and "Parents" and you will play the part of the "Children." Read through the prayer and perform the actions indicated. When you are done draw a picture of the way you think you will look when receiving First Eucharist.
Super great job! You have just begun your sacramental prep journey and are off to a great start. I want you to remember that the Eucharist is the center of our lives!  The Sacrament of the Eucharist unites us with Jesus Christ and to one another. Don't forget to place your Lesson 1 sticker on page 4 of your lesson to show that you have completed the work! We will continue to learn more about this celebration as we continue our lessons!
