Workshop background: Climate change in Jordan is expected to adversely affect the quantity and quality of the country's water resources (TNC 2014). Studies have reported that Jordan, with already scarce water resources, will suffer even more from water scarcity (Nidal et al., 2010). Increasing temperatures, coupled with changing precipitation patterns are expected to decrease surface water availability and, acting in tandem with other stresses, increase water scarcity in Jordan (UNDP 2019). Current water usage exceeds available water rights, and groundwater wells are being exploited at unsustainable rates. National and local level measures are desperately needed to combat the adverse impacts of climate change-induced damage. Besides, it is anticipated that climate change will constrain the ability of Jordan to reach their poverty reduction and sustainable development objectives under the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The achievement of the MDG targets will depend on effective planning for managing climate risks.

The purpose of the HydJo Workshop is to address the challenges of water management in Jordan and to investigate smart and sustainable solutions. The Workshop will provide a unique opportunity for sharing research expertise and networking. There is prominent involvement of both Jordanian and UK female researchers, as participants, Early Career Researchers (ECRs) and mentors. HydJo will also help to develop links for future collaborations between different institutes, to facilitate their sharing of knowledge and experience.

The programme, ‘British Council Researcher Links’ provides opportunities for early career researchers from the UK and internationally to interact, learn from each other and explore opportunities for building long-lasting research collaborations.  As part of this programme, we are now recruiting early career researchers and other relevant stakeholders to participate in the above workshop, jointly organised by the University of Wolverhampton, UK and Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), Jordan.

The British Council will cover the costs related to the participation in the workshop, including travel (both international and local), accommodation and meals. Costs for the visa and travel insurance will be covered; however, participants will be responsible for making all the necessary arrangements. The British Council accepts no responsibility for any problems which may occur when the participants are in-country especially due to the complications caused by COVID-19.

This work was supported by a Newton Funds Researcher Links grant, ID 2019-RLWK11-10570, under the British Council UK and Jordan, partnership. The grant is funded by the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and delivered by the British Council.

Eligibility Criteria:

The application must be submitted using the Researcher Links application form
The application must be submitted before the deadline
Participants must be Early Career Researchers: Early Career Researchers are defined as holding a PhD (or having equivalent research experience) and having up to 10 years of post-PhD research experience. They are equivalent to the ‘Recognised Researcher’ and sometimes ‘Established Researcher’ categories in the EU framework for researchers’ careers.
Participants must have a research or academic position (a permanent post, research contract, or fellowship etc.) at a recognised research institution either in the UK, Vietnam or other ASEAN countries.
