Unidos para los Animales (UPA) is a small animal welfare group based out of La Antigua Guatemala. Our main focus is sterilization clinics for pets belonging to low-income families and free-roaming animals. We also bring in lost, injured, and abandoned animals and nurture them back to physical and mental health. We treat, vaccinate, sterilize, and rehabilitate dogs and cats before placing them in loving homes.
As an UPA volunteer you will have the opportunity to spend time in beautiful Guatemala, practice your Spanish, and learn about animal rescue, welfare, and dog training and rehabilitation. For long-term volunteers, we can arrange transportation from the airport.
If the person interested in volunteering is under 18 years old, please do not complete this application. Send an email to
unidosparalosanimales@gmail.com and we will be happy to inform you about our student program.
We generally ask people for a minimum three-week commitment to volunteer at our rehabilitation center. We don't allow short-term volunteers or visitors at the center because we have a couple of dogs there that do not do well with strangers. Having visitors is very stressful for them and difficult to manage for us.
If you are interested in volunteering for a day or two, we can sometimes arrange for people to help us walk dogs or socialize puppies in town, which can be very helpful, fun for everyone, and a nice way to be involved in our project.
We also have volunteer opportunities at our monthly sterilization clinics.
General volunteer requirements:

Must be comfortable getting your hands dirty
Must be able to walk large dogs in steep terrain
