Personal Project Syllabus 2021-22
The completion of a personal project over the course of the tenth grade year serves as the culminating experience of your journey in the Middle Years Program. This project will give you the opportunity to apply the skills that you have been developing since the day you enrolled at SMMHS. It also gives you the freedom to choose a project that is personally interesting to you. There are a few things that you (and your parents) should know and agree to before embarking on this journey.

If you have any questions, feel free to use your supervisor and Directed Studies teachers as resources, see Mrs. Haydon or Mrs. Bouldin, or visit the Signal Mountain Personal Project website: http://bit.ly/smmhsPP

Everything related to Personal Project will be housed in ManageBac. This is where the project coordinators, your directed studies teacher, and your supervisor will contact you most often. So, please be sure to check ManageBac frequently. You are encouraged to bring a device to Directed Studies to work on your project.

At the end of the project you should have a minimum of three meetings recorded on your Academic Honesty form. These meetings should be a summary of what was discussed and suggested on your rough drafts. Furthermore, these meetings should be recorded by your supervisor.

There are many formats/approaches you can take to complete the report: written, electronic, oral, visual, or a written/visual combo. Please visit the “Reporting” section of the website for more specific details and examples of each.

Presentation of the project, in person (if Covid allows), with a tablet or computer (no cell phones) is required for your project to be considered complete. Presentations will take place at the annual Signal Showcase (date TBA).

Completing the project with a passing score is a pre-requisite to gaining access to our Diploma Program.

Students are eligible to receive the rewards of preferred parking their junior year and off-campus lunch during the second semester of their junior year if they have an initial supervisor assessed score of at least a 10 (parking + DP) or an 16 (parking + lunch+ DP); AND the following documents uploaded into ManageBac by MARCH 2, 2022:

-three documented meetings with the supervisor on the Academic Honesty Form
-a minimum of 7 substantive entries in the process journal, 3 examples of evidence of the product through the process, and a slideshow for Signal Showcase
-the final report
-a works cited page
-a learning goal, a product goal and well-defined criteria

Signal Mountain teachers will assess your project before it is moderated by IB. The initial score will be used to determine rewards. Revisions can be made only for your personal benefit or to earn a score that meets the DP requirement.

You will be able to work on your projects during Directed Studies Period. We will provide a suggested timeline for you to follow, but for this year the project will be self-paced. It is your responsibility to make sure your final project, documents, and Academic Honesty meetings are completed and uploaded to the worksheet in Managebac by MARCH 2, 2022.
