James Hernandez
James Hernandez's Bio
James Hernandez, M.Ed. is in his third year of his Ph.D. studies in Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching at the University of Texas at San Antonio with an expected graduation date of December 2022. His research interests include game-based learning, elementary education, and teacher education. As a doctoral student, Mr. Hernandez conducted quantitative and qualitative studies with pre-service and in-service teachers about their beliefs, attitudes, and applications of game-based learning in the classroom. As a follow up, his dissertation study will focus on children’s socio-cultural learning while playing the digital game, Roblox.

Mr. Hernandez will be presenting two of his research projects at the 2022 SITE annual conference. One session is a poster presentation that surveyed 3rd grade, in-service teachers’ TPACK-G (Hsu et al., 2020) scores in a south Texas school district that serves predominately low-income families and students. His second, is a roundtable discussion of a single-subject case study with a former 6th grade teacher and his use of game-based learning in the classroom. Both studies provide insight to the teacher experience with game-based learning at a time where students and teachers are looking towards digital technology more than ever before.

Mr. Hernandez serves on his local school board as a trustee. He believes that educators must be politically and socially connected with the community they serve so that important decisions are informed by theory, practice, and care. He also volunteers as the assistant head instructor at a martial arts studio where he teaches students as young as three years old. Mr. Hernandez enjoys teaching children the value of discipline, hard work, and respect that comes with the natural progression of learning a martial art and believes that these values will benefit his students for the rest of their lives.
