For decades, incarcerated people were forcibly sterilized in hospitals across the state of California. Advocates and survivors fought to bring the sterilizations to light and find justice for survivors. In 2021, after years of advocacy, the California state legislature passed a bill to compensate survivors and to memorialize the harm perpetrated by state institutions.
When the state and the Department of Corrections failed to equitably include survivors in the memorialization process, members of the CCWP community (inside and outside of prison) came together to create a quilt to honor survivors and find healing through community. The project grew to include three beautiful quilts.
We hope these quilts will be shared with communities across California and the country to remember the ongoing state violence in prisons and to help ensure that such violations of reproductive freedom do not happen again.
If you and/or your organization is interested in exhibiting the quilts for an event - please fill out this intake form and you will be contacted by a CCWP member.
