Who is SWGSA?
Social Work Graduate Student Association (SWGSA) was founded in 2001 and was created BY and FOR MSW students at SJSU!

Application Process (applies only to Board of Directors, Committee Chair positions & Cohort Representatives)

Please note: 
  • If multiple people apply for a specific position, voting will occur amongst the current MSW Student Body.
  • Once elections end, those who applied but were not elected into their first/top choice may be offered any remaining available open positions.
  • You can only apply for one position at a time
Eligibility
  1. Applicants must be enrolled in the SJSU MSW program between Summer 2023-Spring 2024
  2. Must maintain a minimum overall 3.0-grade point average and must be enrolled in at least six units
  3. Must be in good standing with SJSU
  4. No experience required
EXECUTIVE BOARD OF DIRECTORS: AVAILABLE POSITIONS
Treasurer (1 position available)

The Treasurer shall control all SWGSA funds, their collection, and distribution and keep the general membership informed of financial matters concerning the association. This may also include applying for special grants or A.S. funding on behalf of the organization.


COMMITTEE CHAIRS/BOARD OF DIRECTORS AVAILABLE POSITIONS 
The Committee Chairpersons shall be members of the Board of Directors and is required to attend meetings. Each Committee Chairperson shall be responsible for reporting the business of their committee at Board meetings and maintaining clear communication with other members of the Board. The committee chairpersons will also be responsible for meeting with their committee members as necessary. The responsibilities of each committee are outlined below
COMMITTEE MEMBERS (NON-EXECUTIVE)

These are non-executive positions with non-voting rights. They are not required to attend monthly SWGSA board meetings, but must meet with their Committee Chairperson (if applicable).

Convocation Committee 
The Convocation Committee is overseen by the Convocation Chair(s). The committee is responsible for planning and organizing the yearly Social Work Convocation. This includes collaborating with USWA and its representatives. Duties include but are not limited to securing a venue, hiring vendors, sending mass communication, participating in monthly committee meetings, securing guest speakers, and selling tickets. This is a closed group. 
Outreach/Social Media Committee 
The Outreach Committee is overseen by the Outreach Chair(s). The committee is responsible for active outreach to all current and prospective social work students in the School of Social Work through SWGSA's social media (i.e., Instagram, Facebook, Twitter), flyer creation and distribution. 
Fundraising/Merchandise Committee 
The Fundraising/Merchandise Committee is overseen by the Fundraising Chair(s). Together, the committee shall oversee SWGSA’s merchandise and organize fundraising efforts. This includes but is not limited to designing apparel, keeping track of inventory, shipping orders, coordinating pickups, creating other promotional items, and finding creative ways to fundraise for the organization (i.e., tabling or partnering with local businesses to host fundraising events).
Social Events Committee 
The Social Events Committee is overseen by the Social Events Chair(s). Together, the committee organizes and hosts major events hosted by the association, including and not limited to the annual Social Work Gala, Sunny Side of Social Work, BBQs, Zoom Social, Comedy Night, Friendsgiving, and Back to School Events. The committee may also create and plan other social events outside of the traditional events listed above.
Education & Empowerment Committee 
The E&E Committee is overseen by the E&E Chair(s). The committee organizes activities that increase and enhance social work knowledge and skills through workshops, speakers, training, and Authentic Conversations. This may include events such as internship networking mixer, mentoring events, LCSW Info Session, Authentic Conversations, or workshops that empower and further students' education. 
Social Justice Committee 
The Social Justice Committee is overseen by the Social Justice Chair(s). Overall, the committee oversees any activities related to social justice initiatives that align with the NASW code of ethics. Overall, the main goal of the SJ committee is to spread awareness about social justice initiatives within our community and educate our students about various topics. This can be done by way of workshops, training, or campaigns.
NASW Student Rep Committee
The NASW Student Representative Committee is overseen by the NASW Student Rep Chair. The committee is responsible for collaborating with the local NASW chapter and planning and participating in local NASW activities. The purpose of this committee is to act as a bridge between SJSU’s SSW and the local NASW chapter. Basic responsibilities may include but are not limited to attending NASW South Bay Unit meetings (~1x per month), organizing, recruiting for, and supporting SJSU MSW students in attending the NASW Legislative Lobby Days.
Podcast Committee
The podcast committee is overseen by the Podcast Host/Chairs. The committee shall work with the School of Social Work to maintain the Social Work Experience podcast. Duties may include but are not limited to identifying and securing guest speakers, creating marketing materials, advertising the podcast, recording episodes, and creating an episode schedule.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE POSITIONS (NON-EXECUTIVE)

These are non-executive positions with non-voting rights. They are not required to attend monthly SWGSA board meetings, but must meet with their Committee Chairperson (if applicable). 

Online/Hybrid Cohort Representatives

The committee is responsible for working on behalf of the SJSU MSW Online student population to advocate for their needs and organize events, training, or activities for the student body.
