Program Background
Working with teachers and administrators, Indiana Phenology facilitates opportunities for students to participate in experiential STEM activities. Younger students learn observation, analysis, and decision-making skills while identifying the stages of plant and animal life. Students in middle and high school are encouraged to identify and answer local scientific research questions, building critical thinking skills and confidence while nurturing a collaborative learning environment.
Phenology in the Classroom
Phenology is more than just learning about the seasons. It's a branch of science that will ignite a passion for nature and discovery. Through outdoor observation of plants and animals on school grounds, students engage in authentic science experiences, gaining an understanding of standardized protocols and use cases for scientific data while working together to answer questions.
Adaptable Pedagogy
Lesson plans and activities are adaptable to the diverse learning styles and abilities across age groups. Through a series of workshops, teachers and administrators are guided through the process of tailoring the program to the unique strengths, needs and interests of your students. Whether your program engages a single classroom or spans a student's career at a school, Indiana Phenology works with you to develop a solution as unique as your Hoosier classrooms.
Sample Activities
An Indiana Phenology staff member or volunteer presents a virtual climate change presentation as a supplement to an existing science curriculum.

Preschool students identify seasons and seasonal changes during hands-on activities that include color theory, science, and social development.

Middle school students track data for migratory patterns in birds. Over a period of three years, they develop a deep understanding of how temperature, climate, and resource availability can impact the natural behaviors of animals.

High school students choose a species and utilize statistical methods and technology to analyze statewide data and present the information visually to their peers.
