What is the purpose of this study?
This study aims to understand the experiences of ad hoc academics working in precarious contracts in India.
A precarious contract means work that is
- lacking job security
- not salaried, paid in wages
- employment is time bound or gig-based (not permanent)
The study involves 2 levels of participation
- Survey only (completely anonymous) - [should take approx. 10mins]
- Survey + Interview (completely confidential) - [will be scheduled keeping in mind participants availability]
The interview will consist of a second round of informed consent process, allowing interviewees various means by which to protect their identity. The interview does not elicit information about names of institutions and will not name research participants in any form of writing (e.g. transcriptions or research manuscripts).
Please participate if:- you are an academician, i.e. researchers or professor, who is employed under precarious contract in institutes of higher education
- your employment status qualifies being described as ad hoc/temporary/non-tenured/non-permanent faculty/researcher
- you could be working in multiple institutes/organizations, either engaging in only teaching responsibilities, only research activities or both teaching and research activities.
- you have a minimum of 2 years work experience in such roles.
- you are employed in Humanities and Social Sciences (e.g. Departments of Psychology, Philosophy, Economics, etc.)
Who is conducting the study?
This study is being undertaken by Saloni Diwakar (Psychology researcher & faculty), Dr. Pooja Prabhavalkar (Psychology researcher & faculty), Ayushman Shakya (Research Assistant), and Sukanya Ganguly (Research Assistant) -- research authors at the Department of Psychology at Nolmë Labs.
Nolmë Labs is an academic research and science communication organization with a special focus on mental health advocacy. Our objective is to make quality and affordable mental health care equitably accessible through research, policy, and advocacy.
Ethical Considerations
The research team anticipate negligible to no risk to interviewees through participation in this study. Participation of interviewees is voluntary. Any participant can withdraw at any time without penalty. All survey responses are mandatorily anonymous. Confidentiality of participants is paramount and all interviews will be transcribed and identifying information masked. Data will be stored in password protected folders with access restricted solely to the research team.
