Arts Room Contract + Sign-Up
Purpose: to provide a fun and low-key art-making space for first-year students.

Who may use the space: any Proctor or Harvard First-Year student in good standing with the University.

When the space can be used: students with swipe-access have 24-hour access to the room. First-year students without swipe access may use the room during First-Year Arts events or after a specific request is granted by Amanda Boldt (firstyeararts@fas.harvard.edu)

Location: The Arts Room is located at the far end (west end) of the Holworthy Common Room (in the basement).

The arts space is connected to Holworthy Common Room which has additional seating, kitchen, and activity space. Please keep all art activities in the arts room and all food in the Holworthy Common Room. If you want to use the Holworthy Common Room at the same time as using the Arts Room, please be sure to reserve both spaces (the Art Room through Olivia and the Common Room through RoomBook).

Accessibility: The Arts Room and the Holworthy Common Room are wheelchair accessible spaces. For questions, concerns, or requests, please feel free to contact Amanda Boldt at firstyeararts@harvard.edu and/or Harvard University Disability Resources (disabilityresources@harvard.edu).

When Can Proctors Use the Freshman Arts Room?
  • All proctors have 24/7 access to the Arts Room through their Harvard ID. If your swipe access is not working, contact firstyeararts@fas.harvard.edu
  • Proctors may reserve the First-Year Arts Room for study breaks or events through Amanda Boldt, Director for First-Year Arts Initiatives, at firstyeararts@fas.harvard.edu. Please contact her at least 24-hours in advance to discuss availability.
What supplies may Proctors use for Study Breaks?

Proctors may use any of the available materials, with the exception of the items in the “FAB Use Only” bin and the locked cabinet. If Proctors would like to use other materials in the locked cabinet (X-Acto knives, etc.) please let Olivia know ahead of time.

Cleaning:
  • Custodial staff is not responsible for cleaning up the art room, with the exception of emptying the trash. This is a shared space and we are all responsible for cleaning it.
  • DO: wash your brushes thoroughly and clean up after yourself (there will be instructions on how to do this in the arts room)
  • DO NOT: dump large quantities of paint down the sink. We have had serious clogging issues. Small amounts (like cleaning a palette or brush) is okay as long as you rinse thoroughly afterward.

Additional Rules for the Art Room:

● No food or drink allowed in the art room.

● Supplies are paid for by the Arts Initiatives budget and are there for first-years. Please email Olivia Cosío (firstyeararts@fas.harvard.edu) if you notice a material running low.

● The art room does not have good ventilation, so no projects can be done inside that will create fumes or dust (including oil painting). There is a fan and an air purifier available for use.

● There is a first aid kit in the supply cupboard.

● Students can leave projects to dry, but only for 24 hours.

● Adherence to all of Harvard University's health and safety guidelines apply in the art room.
