Public Bank LA (PLBA) is an all-volunteer organization founded in 2017 with the goal of establishing an ethical and transparent city-owned pubic bank accountable to the communities of Los Angeles. We led the advocacy efforts that resulted in the LA Angeles City Council's recent unanimous vote to move forward with the creation of the Los Angeles Public Bank. We have made significant progress as a grassroots group in the past few years. PBLA led the Measure B campaign in Los Angeles, the first voter referendum on public banking in the United States.

We are a founding member of the California Public Banking Alliance, and through our efforts, we passed the historic Assembly Bill 857, the California Public Banking Act. This legislation made California the first state to authorize the chartering of municipal public banks. In 2021, Public Bank LA helped lead the passage of our second public banking victory, AB 1177, the California Public Banking Option Act, which brings essential financial services to unbanked and underbanked Californians.
In June 2023, Public Bank of LA was instrumental in securing LA City Council's unanimous vote to move forward with funding the development of a business plan and viability study for a Los Angeles public bank. This is a major achievement that brings us closer to establishing a financial institution that is accountable to the communities of Los Angeles and dedicated to serving the public good.
