Have you read The Magicians or seen the Netflix show?
To be an tecShaman, we see every plan, prediction, and look into our past as magic. Students pledge to not use magic without consulting the VVC (Ventral Vagal Complex). As it's inside you and not a teacher, professor, book, or totem, it's about accessing the part of your neurology "opposed" to Fight Flight Freeze.
This video will give you background to how tecShaman deviates from Breakbills. There is much more in the way of deviation, but it is a good reference. We call Breakbills and The Magician, our "straw man".
What do we mean "strawman"? How about win-win? A tecShaman lives in the realm of magic and story, but serves organizations seeking a win-win.
What do you make of this image? What does the bee symbolize? Why do you think society denies the chance that a total collapse of our ecology and economy may be coming? Why do we keep polluting?
Why does an organization ask for new blood or new ideas? How might a tecShaman help?
What do you make of the above image? She is afraid they won't be able to train before the baddy (we call Larry) arrives? Do you feel collapse is coming soon? How will that be?
In this scene, he says "we have no control". Is it possible that even when we are bad, it is just our attempt to do our best? What is the one who says we have free will doesn't exist? Can we forgive our ignorance? What might happen if we admitted we don't know if we have any control?
Confession to yourself
Can you be honest with yourself? Can you see a benefit of admitting how you feel?
If one feels desperate to prove their worthiness and show that they belong or are special, how could they misuse magic? Might they think the self-image is who they are and the ticket to getting love? Might they fear a Negative Self Image? Would you as a character be willing to try to consult VVC (sensory system and social brain) and the IIP (Idealized Inner Parent) if we train you how to do so so? Are you willing to feel helpless, lost, confused and rejected if that is the price of magic ?
When you see the long road ahead, how do you react? Is there fear, desire, or equanimity? Can you let go of your dreams or do they define you? Do you need to know and control that which can't be known or controlled? Are you willing or eager (trust with our without attachment) to surrender the safety of certainty and knowledge, and then, in that space, perhaps receive a different flavor of certainty and knowledge? Do you have a need to achieve, win love and belonging?  Do you have the need to avoid them? Are you ready to move beyond FADD (Fear, Anger, Desire, Depression) and Self Doubt, or do you feel they have more work to do on you? Do you feel the need to remove Fear, Anger, Desire, Depression (FADD)? Do you feel the need to be forgiven and powerful; autonomous and free? Define free. Are we free if there is no need to get rid of FADD? Before we cast any spell, we show our FADD to the Idealized Inner Parent to gain wisdom and compassion.
What are these books?
What do you do if you fear someone (like a peer or authority) is rejecting or has rejected you? What do you do if you fear someone is judging you or not showing you love? Maybe you get negative self-worth or judge them to defend yourself? What do you do if they seem mad at you? Do you try to make them happy? Do you aim to appease, impress, or do you get angry, or some other?
What were those books? If you are never able to cast a spell, this is not a failure. Casting a spell that should not have been cast can be dangerous. You must state your intentions and then we consult VVC. Thoughts?
If you were to meet someone who you felt was only in your mind, is there any value to asking them if they are real? Why is it more important to ascertain their intentions than if they are real? How are thoughts about our self-image like meeting an imaginary person?
"How would asking me if I am real, help?
Twin rams, Ambra and Umber.
Above is an image of Amber and Umber. Ambra says "leave" if you are afraid of mystery, change, and magic. If we are afraid of mystery, change, and magic - our spells (plans and predictions) will be based in fear. We want to admit if we have become too attached to having an identity that depends on being something. Can you do that? Often we feel a need to solve or hide a mystery; cause or prevent a change; or focused upon a desire to control magic instead of letting it control you. Yes, if magic spells (plans and prediction) control you while you are controlled by MEL, that is not a great situation. But if you are at peace, aligned with the wisdom and compassion of the IIP, then the spell (plan or prediction) can cast you.  Below is the entrance exam at BreakBills. This questionnaire is our exam. What do you think of it? How has it made you feel to take this quiz?
Entrance exam
35 minutes into episode 1 of The Magicians on Netflix, Julia  shows her cut arm and says, "I would not let myself forget." If we ask you to forget something, even if it were something you wanted, would you find it hard to drop it?
Jane Chatwin says, "You don't decide when to go to Fillory. It decides when you are deserving. Why would it be better to say "compatible" instead of "deserving?
Jane Chatwin on Netflix series
The Netflix adaptation does not blame Quentin for the Beast, but the seance. In the book, Quentin was criticized by his professor and wanted revenge, so he created mischief (a wobbling lecturn) which let the Beast appear. Thoughts you have about how magic could go awry if the person casts it from mischief, or with the Netflix version, from meddling in forces beyond your control or understanding? What do you think about people praying to have events happen or stop happening? What do you think of on mystics who can (or claim or to) contact the dead to get information instead of contacting them to seek/give forgiveness?
