The 50th annual "Helen to the Atlantic Balloon Race" actually launches on Thursday, but they also operate balloons Sat and Sun, EARLY morning and late afternoon. And yes, from our monthly meeting place in Marietta, this is a 2 hour drive - thus to meet the insane 6:30 event time, you'd have to leave Marietta at 4:30 am!! Too early? See ya when you get there. Else, why so early?
Well, the balloonists start setting up and filling their balloons that early, and if conditions allow for a launch on Saturday morning, that would happen as early as 7:30. Honestly, filling the balloons with fire-heated air is one of the most photo-worthy aspects of the event, so if you're going to do this, may as well get there early. Also, while there's lots of parking on a huge grassy lot, latecomers may endure quite a hike to get near the launch area.
PLUS: after the balloons, we will travel another 15 minutes to the Anna Ruby Waterfall! (Time / lunch plans TBD later.)
Anna Ruby location: 3455 Anna Ruby Falls Rd, Helen, GA 30545
The hike to the falls is a short, paved 0.4 miles with a couple short sections that are steep.
Suggestions:
Bring a mid-wide zoom for shots on the ground, maybe a super-wide for same. Longer glass will be useful for isolating the balloons once they're up - but remember, compositions are generally more interesting if they include earthly elements. For the falls, mid-wide zoom will be handy, and a tripod / remote shutter release.
Carpoolers will depart at 4:30 AM from the Sewell Mill Library (drive estimate is 120 mins from there)
PLEASE be there before the departure time, allowing a few minutes to load gear.
