Cette conférence portera sur la carrière de Beauford Delaney, né à Knoxville, Tennessee, en 1901. Aujourd'hui mondialement reconnu, cet artiste africain-américain étudia à Boston avant de s'installer à New York puis en France. La conférence sera l'occasion de s'intéresser en particulier à sa pratique en atelier pendant et après son arrivé en France. Car c'est dans son atelier de la banlieue parisienne que l'écrivain James Baldwin, son ami de longue date, observa un profond changement dans l'art de Delaney. Une période marquée par une riche production artistique, durant laquelle, devenu un maître de l'expressionnisme abstrait, il participa à de nombreuses expositions.

This lecture will focus on the career of Beauford Delaney, born in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1901. This now internationally renowned African-American artist studied in Boston before moving to New York then France. The conference will focus on his studio practice during and after his move to France. For it was in his studio in the Paris suburbs that the writer James Baldwin, his long-time friend, observed a profound change in Delaney's art. It was a period of rich artistic production, during which he became a master of abstract expressionism and participated in numerous exhibitions.
