Federal regulations provide financial aid administrators at colleges and universities the authority to make adjustments to the information provided on the FAFSA when a Special or Unusual Circumstance exist.

A Special Circumstance refers to financial situations such as loss of job that justify an aid administrator adjusting data elements in the Cost of Attendance or in the Student Aid Index/Estimated Family Contribution calculation.

An Unusual Circumstance refers to the conditions that justify an aid administrator making an adjustment to a student’s dependency status based on a unique situation (e.g., human trafficking, refugee or asylee status, parental abandonment, incarceration), more commonly referred to as a Dependency Override.
