Localising SDGs: The All Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia on SDGs (APPG-SDG) as a Model
The All Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia on SDGs (APPGM-SDG) is a bipartisan group that was established by the Parliament of Malaysia in 2019. The members are Parliamentarians from both the lower house (Dewan Rakyat) and Senators from the upper house (Dewan Negara) while the secretariat is helmed by the Malaysian CSO SDG Alliance.

The group has played an active role to mobilize the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in particular, towards localizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the parliamentary constituency level. This is done through a process which includes mapping and identifying local issues to the SDGs, identifying potential solutions to local challenges, as well as executing small scale projects as solutions to implement the SDGs.
The process adopts a multistakeholder and participative approach, with issues, challenges and potential solutions being identified through engagements with the parliamentarian’s office, local NGOs and leaders, and government agencies at the ground level. The team also consists of local researchers to facilitate the process.

This side event aims to share the APPGM-SDG experience as a model for localizing the SDGs. In particular, it aims to demonstrate the potential of having a multistakeholder process that includes participation from the parliamentarians, government, CSO, academia and local community stakeholders. By adopting the model, the overall aim is for the SDGs to leave no one behind and catalyze a process for implementation at various levels including the local and national level.
