Join the Human Rights Center for a discussion with Faculty Director and UN Special Rapporteur for the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while counter terrorism and Human Rights Center Faculty Director, Prof. Fionnuala Ní Aoláin.

This event will focus on Professor Ní Aoláin’s recent report to the United Nations General Assembly. The report focuses on the impact of counter-terrorism on peacemaking, peacebuilding, sustaining peace, and conflict prevention and resolution. Prof. Ní Aoláin will discuss her report and share a short clip of the interactive dialogue with UN Member States. A Q&A session will follow.

Background: In 2017, Professor Ní Aoláin was appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Council as United Nations Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism. In this capacity she works closely with states and United Nations entities to advance human rights protections in some of the most difficult contexts globally. She was re-elected by States for a further three-year term in 2020. The Special Rapporteur is mandated by HRC resolution 15/15. As part of this duty, she submits reports to both the UN General Assembly and the Human Rights Council. Her previous reports can be found here. Megan Manion ’16 leads the Human Rights Center support of the mandate, which includes four senior legal advisors and eight UMN law students.
