LGBTQ+ in Scouting
As part of my Scouts of the World Award, I am creating a resource to help adults within Bedfordshire Scouting on supporting the inclusion of LGBTQ+ people and in providing activities for the youth members on raising awareness of LGBTQ+. In my opinion, out of the protected characteristics under the Equality Act (2010) many are already inclusive under the Sections’ programme within the International Badge, the Faith Badges, and the Disability Awareness Badge. However, raising awareness of LGBTQ+ does not yet have a programme area (LGBTQ+ can contribute to a third of the protected characteristics). Due to the impact of Section 28, schools are only now including LGBTQ+ within the curriculum. I have looked in depth with the statutory guidance that schools are using to include LGBTQ+ in the curriculum, and I will be following it closely for each Section depending on the Key Stage they are in (e.g. KS1 for Beavers e.t.c) to ensure the information is age appropriate. This pack would be an optional resource that Leaders can use either for certain times of the year. For example, LGBTQ+ history month (February in the UK) or Pride Month (June) or throughout the year. Within the pack there would be information for Leaders on where to find more resources relating to LGBTQ+ issues and, there would also be information on how to make their meetings LGBT-inclusive.
