9th Grade Course Registration 2023-2024
Rising 9th Grade Course Registration Instructions

Welcome to The Stony Brook School! You have made a great choice to join a community of scholars who bring wisdom and imagination together to cultivate great vision in the next generation of leaders. If you are a returning student, we are excited to help you plan for next year. Now is the time to start thinking about next year’s courses.

Please review the Course Catalog, which is available at www.sbs.org/academics.  This includes graduation requirements, registration rules, and information about the registration process (pp. 2-7). Please read the registration rules carefully, particularly regarding individual class prerequisites, listed with each course.

In 9th grade, this process is fairly straightforward, although you do need to make some choices.

On this form you will be choosing full year and/or one-semester courses.  All students must take the equivalent of 5 full year courses, but no more than 7.  If a 7th full-year-course is chosen, it needs to be a low-homework course. This is designated with [LH] in the course catalog.  Note - if you choose more than the allowed equivalent of 7 full-year-courses, the ones that you choose last will be removed from your selections, so be sure to choose carefully.

Required Courses
All 9th Graders are REQUIRED to take English, History, Science, and Math. Students for whom English is their native language must take 3 years of a World Language (Chinese, Latin, or Spanish).

Please read carefully the directions for each class in the choices below.

Once you have completed your schedule and submitted it, if you and/or your parents still have specific questions regarding your schedule, please contact the registrar at registrar@sbs.org.

Humanities 9 is required for all 9th graders and the only option.

Take the next level of Math if prerequisites have been met,  this is based on transcript evaluation and/or placement test.
Students that are very strong in math sometimes choose to take Geometry and Algebra II Honors in the same year.  This is not expected of students, but is possible. Select this option if you would like to be considered for this option (to be reviewed by the department chair).
Science *

Science Elective
Students very strong in science or who have already taken Biology or Living Environment, may choose to take another science class.
World Language
Choose the the appropriate level of Latin, Chinese, or Spanish. Students for whom English is not their native language are not required, but are strongly encouraged by our College Counseling Department, to take three years of a World Language.  ***French language, beginning at level II, is also available through Middlebury Interactive Languages online, though we only recommend these for highly motivated, strong academic students as these courses are largely self-directed. Students wishing to take French must receive the approval of the Language Department Chair. There is an additional fee of $600 for these online courses.
