1. Academic Policy

NEW Scholars students are required to earn at least a 2.5 grade point average (B- or
higher), as indicated on their semester report cards. Students who do not meet this
requirement will follow an academic intervention procedure including: phone calls, letter
notifications, conference requests, and academic support. After the third violation,
however, the student will be removed from the program and forfeit any scholarship
eligibility. Parents/guardians and students will be informed of any academic policy violations as they
occur, along with any expectations needed to ensure their continued participation in the
NEW Scholars program.

2. Behavior Policy

NEW Scholars is committed to creating a successful environment for students to succeed.
We use positive behavior reinforcements and we believe in respect for each other, as it is
very important that each NEW Scholar gets the support needed to succeed in college. If a
student is acting in a disrespectful way, coaches will notify the parents/guardians and document the
incident. If the behavior continues, students will be removed from the day’s programming and this will
result in an absent mark on their attendance sheet. If the student continues to
misbehave, a notification letter will be sent, stating the student is being removed from the
NEW Scholars program. Immediate dismissal may result from, but is not limited to,
fighting, stealing, sexual harassment and the possession of any weapons or illegal
materials.

Students who are suspended from their school may not come to NEW Scholars events
during their time of suspension. Students will not receive an excused absence for events
which are missed due to being suspended from school.

If a student is expelled from school, they will be automatically removed from NEW
Scholars.

3. Attendance Policy

Student Programming:

NEW Scholars students are expected to attend at least 80% of all student programming.
Some events and activities require mandatory attendance. Students who do not meet
attendance requirements or students with excessive or unexcused absences may be
removed from the program and forfeit any scholarship eligibility. If a student will miss
programming or a scheduled program activity, please inform the high school or middle
school program coordinator by noon of the day programming is scheduled. Unexcused
absences may count against scholarship points earned.

Parent/Guardian Workshops:

Parents/guardians are expected to attend monthly parent/guardian information sessions. Parent/guardian attendance at these meetings can earn additional scholarship points for their student(s). In
certain circumstances, parents/guardians may be excused from attending a workshop. If
excused, parent/guardian attendance will not negatively affect their student’s potential scholarship
points. If parents/guardians are unable to attend the monthly workshop, they may designate a
different adult to attend in their place. Please notify the high school or middle school
coordinator of any changes or expected absences.
